Τη Δευτέρα του Πάσχα, το απόγευμα μετά τα μεσάνυχτα, πριν ξαπλώσω για ύπνο, βγήκα στον μικρό κήπο πίσω από το σπίτι μου. Ο ουρανός ήταν σκοτεινός και καλυμμένος με αστέρια. Φαινόταν ότι το έβλεπα για πρώτη φορά, και μια μακρινή ψαλμωδία φαινόταν να κατέρχεται από αυτό. Τα χείλη μου μουρμούρισαν, πολύ απαλά: «Υψώστε τον Κύριο τον Θεό μας, και προσκυνήστε το υποπόδιο των ποδιών Του». Κάποτε ένας άγιος μου είπε ότι αυτές τις ώρες ανοίγουν οι ουρανοί. Ο αέρας εξέπνευσε ένα άρωμα από τα λουλούδια και τα βότανα που είχα φυτέψει. «Ο ουρανός και η γη είναι γεμάτοι από τη δόξα του Κυρίου».
Θα μπορούσα κάλλιστα να είχα μείνει εκεί μόνος μέχρι το ξημέρωμα. Ήμουν σαν χωρίς σώμα και χωρίς κανένα δεσμό με τη γη. Φοβούμενος όμως ότι η απουσία μου θα ενοχλούσε όσους ήταν μαζί μου στο σπίτι, επέστρεψα και ξάπλωσα.
Ο ύπνος δεν με είχε κυριεύσει πραγματικά. Δεν ξέρω αν ήμουν ξύπνιος ή κοιμόμουν, όταν ξαφνικά ένας παράξενος άντρας σηκώθηκε μπροστά μου. Ήταν χλωμός σαν νεκρός. Τα μάτια του ήταν σαν ανοιχτά και με κοίταξε τρομαγμένος. Το πρόσωπό του ήταν σαν μάσκα, σαν μούμια. Το αστραφτερό, σκούρο κίτρινο δέρμα του τεντώθηκε σφιχτά πάνω από το κεφάλι του νεκρού του με όλες τις κοιλότητες του. Ήταν σαν να λαχανιαζόταν. Στο ένα χέρι κρατούσε κάποιο περίεργο αντικείμενο που δεν μπορούσα να διακρίνω. το άλλο χέρι του έπιανε το στήθος σαν να υπέφερε.
Αυτό το πλάσμα με γέμισε τρόμο. Τον κοίταξα και με κοίταξε χωρίς να μιλήσει, σαν να περίμενε να τον αναγνωρίσω, όσο περίεργος κι αν ήταν. Και μια φωνή μου είπε: «Είναι έτσι κι έτσι!». Και τον αναγνώρισα αμέσως. Μετά άνοιξε το στόμα του και αναστέναξε. Η φωνή του ήρθε από μακριά. βγήκε σαν από ένα βαθύ πηγάδι.
Ήταν σε μεγάλη αγωνία και υπέφερα γι' αυτόν. Τα χέρια του, τα πόδια του, τα μάτια του — όλα έδειχναν ότι υπέφερε. Μέσα στην απελπισία μου πήγαινα να τον βοηθήσω, αλλά μου έδωσε ένα σημάδι με το χέρι του να σταματήσω. Άρχισε να γκρινιάζει με τέτοιο τρόπο που πάγωσα. Τότε μου είπε: "Δεν ήρθα, με έστειλαν. Ταρακουνιέμαι χωρίς σταματημό, ζαλίζομαι. Προσευχήσου ο Θεός να με λυπηθεί. Θέλω να πεθάνω αλλά δεν μπορώ. Αλίμονο! Όλα όσα μου είπες πριν είναι αλήθεια. Θυμάσαι πώς, αρκετές μέρες πριν από το θάνατό μου, ήρθες να με δεις και μίλησες για τη θρησκεία; Υπήρχαν άλλοι δύο φίλοι μαζί μου, άπιστοι σαν εμένα. Μίλησες και κορόιδευαν. Όταν έφυγες, είπαν: " Τι κρίμα! Είναι έξυπνος και πιστεύει τις βλακείες που πιστεύουν οι γριές!».
«Μια άλλη φορά, και άλλες φορές, σου είπα: «Αγαπητέ Φώτιο, μάζεψε χρήματα, αλλιώς θα πεθάνεις φτωχός. Δες τα πλούτη μου, και θέλω κι άλλα». Μου είπες τότε: 'Έχεις υπογράψει σύμφωνο με τον θάνατο, ότι μπορείς να ζήσεις όσα χρόνια θέλεις και να χαρείς γεράματα;'
Αν συνεχίσεις να ζεις όπως κάνεις, θα πεθάνεις μπροστά μου και θα είσαι υπεύθυνος για αυτούς που έχεις παρασύρει. Ως γιατρός σας λέω και βεβαιώνω ότι θα ζήσω εκατόν δέκα χρόνια…»
Αφού τα είπε όλα αυτά, γύρισε από κει και πέρα ​​σαν να ήταν σε ψησταριά. Άκουσα τους στεναγμούς του: "Αχ! Ωχ! Ω! Και τώρα βλέπω ότι όλα όσα ονόμασα ιστορίες, μύθοι, χάρτινα φανάρια—είναι αλήθεια. Η αγωνία που βιώνω τώρα—αυτό είναι το αληθινό, αυτό είναι το σκουλήκι που δεν κοιμάται ποτέ, αυτό είναι το τρίξιμο των δοντιών».
Αφού μίλησε έτσι, εξαφανίστηκε. Άκουγα ακόμα τα βογγητά του, τα οποία σταδιακά έσβησαν. Ο ύπνος είχε αρχίσει να με κυριεύει, όταν ένιωσα ένα παγωμένο χέρι να με αγγίζει. Άνοιξα τα μάτια μου και τον είδα ξανά μπροστά μου. Αυτή τη φορά ήταν πιο φρικτός και πιο μικρόσωμος στο σώμα. Είχε γίνει σαν βρέφος που θήλαζε, με ένα μεγάλο κεφάλι γέρου που κουνούσε.
«Σε λίγο θα ξημερώσει η μέρα και αυτοί που με έστειλαν θα έρθουν να με αναζητήσουν!»

Αντί να τον χαίρεται, η καλοσύνη τον πικραίνει, γιατί τον κάνει να νιώθει την ήττα του. Η κατάσταση αυτών των τελευταίων είναι χειρότερη από τη δική μου. "Τώρα βλέπω πόσο σε στεναχώρησε η συμπεριφορά των κακών ανθρώπων. Πώς άντεχες με τόση υπομονή τα δηλητηριασμένα βελάκια που έβγαιναν από τα χείλη μας και σε αντιμετώπιζαν ως υποκριτές, χλευαστές του Θεού και απατεώνες του λαού.
