Who are the Turkish Cypriot

Who Are the Turkish Cypriots Really? A Look Into Their Historical Origins

✍️ By Anninos

🧬 Who Are the Turkish Cypriots?

Turkish Cypriots form a distinct community in Cyprus, speaking Turkish and adhering mainly to Sunni Islam. Their presence officially began in 1571, when Cyprus came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. However, many of them were not “Turks” in the ethnic sense, but Greek or Maronite Christians who converted to Islam—often for survival, social advancement, or tax exemption.

⚔️ Conversions to Islam in Cyprus

During the early Ottoman period (16th–17th centuries), a significant number of Greek Cypriots converted to Islam, either voluntarily or under pressure. According to historian Ronald Jennings, 30–34% of early “Muslim Cypriots” were in fact Islamized locals.

🧢 The Linobambaki – Crypto-Christians

An in-between group were the Linobambaki: individuals who outwardly embraced Islam but secretly maintained Christian beliefs and practices, particularly in remote villages. Notable communities included Louroujina, Potamia, Ayios Sozomenos, and others in the Mesaoria region.

🕌 The Identity of Turkish Cypriots

Many Turkish Cypriots are descended from:

  • Ottoman settlers (soldiers, officials),
  • Converted Greeks and Latins, and
  • Crypto-Christian families (Linobambaki), who were gradually assimilated.

For this reason, genetic studies show that many Turkish Cypriots carry Mediterranean/Greek DNA markers.

🗣️ Tradition, Language, and Religion

Although Turkish-speaking, Turkish Cypriots preserved many elements of Cypriot folk culture: Greek-based words, local cuisine, customs, and even folk songs. In older generations, some also spoke Greek.

🔁 From Islamization to Turkification

In the 20th century, especially after 1974, Turkish nationalism led to a systematic “Turkification” of the community and an effort to erase their Christian-Greek roots. However, deep roots cannot be easily erased.

📌 Conclusion

Turkish Cypriots are not all descendants of “ethnic Turks” but rather the product of a complex historical blend. Many are actually Islamized Greeks, a forgotten yet essential part of our shared Cypriot history. The truth, however uncomfortable for some, is part of our collective identity.
