VISION OF SAINT ANTHIMOS

The Monastery of Saint Anthimos was completed in 1928 and became inhabited in 1930 by 30 nuns.

Before the German occupation, Saint Anthimos met a Turkish commander. He was an exceptionally kind man. He repaired damaged churches, built new ones, helped widows and orphans, cared for the poor, and protected the people. He never allowed Turkish soldiers to commit acts of injustice against anyone.

Seeing such goodness, Saint Anthimos wondered:

“Is it possible that this man, simply because he is a Turk and not baptized, will go to hell despite all the good he has done?”

Saint Anthimos fasted for an entire week and prayed, asking Christ to reveal the fate of the Turkish commander after his death.

Then the saint received a vision.

He saw a beautiful place, like a vast orchard filled with magnificent trees. As he approached, he saw the Turkish commander standing there. The commander called out:

“Welcome, my Anthimos! Come and see where I am.”

Saint Anthimos asked him:

“Are you in Paradise?”

The commander replied:

“Yes, but this Paradise is not the same Paradise that you Christians enter. I cannot enter the Paradise where the Orthodox Christians go.”

He continued:

“This is indeed a paradise, but it is different—a paradise prepared for good people.”

Saint Anthimos asked:

“So there are other paradises besides the one Paradise?”

The commander answered:

“Yes, my dear Anthimos. God cared for all people. There are many places of blessedness prepared for those who lived good lives.”

Saint Anthimos then asked:

“Why were you not baptized?”

The commander replied:

“I know that this remains upon my conscience, but I am well here. I am at peace.”

Saint Anthimos asked one final question:

“Are there still higher places?”

The commander answered:

“Yes, my dear Anthimos. The Third Heaven is reserved only for the Orthodox. It is the Heaven to which the Apostle Paul was caught up. Neither I nor Christians of other denominations can enter there. The Paradise where God dwells is only for the Orthodox.”

Do the Souls of the Departed Know What Happens on Earth?

The Orthodox Answer

From time to time, the view is expressed that the souls of the departed know absolutely nothing about what takes place on earth and that they can never appear to the living. Such an absolute position, however, does not fully reflect the teaching of the Orthodox Church.

Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition teach that God alone is omniscient. Human souls do not become all-knowing after death. Nevertheless, this does not mean that God cannot reveal to them whatever He wills.

Christ Himself declares, “He is not the God of the dead, but of the living” (Matthew 22:32). Before God, the righteous are not nonexistent—they are alive in His presence.

In the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31), the rich man, after his death, is aware of his condition, recognizes Abraham and Lazarus, and is concerned about his brothers who are still living on earth. Although this is a parable, Christ does not use false spiritual realities to teach divine truth.

Likewise, at the Transfiguration of the Lord (Matthew 17:1–3), Moses and Elijah appear and speak with Christ about His coming Passion. Moses had died many centuries earlier, yet he appears fully conscious and aware. This demonstrates that the righteous are not in a state of complete ignorance or nonexistence.

In the Epistle to the Hebrews we read that we are “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1), an image that the Orthodox Church understands as expressing the living communion of the saints with the Body of Christ.

The lives of the saints are filled with accounts in which holy men and women appeared, warned, comforted, or strengthened the faithful. These manifestations did not occur because the saints acted independently, but because God permitted them for the salvation and spiritual benefit of His people.

Saint John of Damascus teaches that the saints, being near God, intercede for the faithful. Saint Gregory Palamas speaks of the living communion between the Church Triumphant and the Church Militant. Saint Symeon the New Theologian also describes experiences that reveal the active presence of God’s grace even after the death of the righteous.

At the same time, the Orthodox Church strictly forbids every attempt to invoke or communicate with the dead through spiritualistic or occult practices, in accordance with the clear prohibition of Holy Scripture (Deuteronomy 18:10–12). Necromancy is one thing; God’s providential intervention is another. When God permits an appearance or a revelation, it is entirely His initiative and never the result of human effort.

Therefore, Orthodox teaching does not claim that the souls of the departed know everything, nor that they communicate with the living whenever they wish. Rather, the Church teaches that the souls of the departed are in the hands of God and know only what He chooses to reveal to them. Any genuine appearance or communication occurs solely by God’s permission and for the spiritual benefit of His people, never through human initiative.

This is the balanced and traditional teaching of the Orthodox Church, as it is expressed in Holy Scripture, the lives of the saints, and the witness of the Holy Fathers.

4 FALLS. ONE HUMAN STORY

Pride. Betrayal. Power. Choice.

The falls that shaped humanity.

THE FALL OF ADAM AND EVE

Disobedience brought sin into the world.

Genesis 3

THE FALL OF JUDAS

Betrayal led him to sell the Son of God.

Matthew 26:14-16

THE FALL OF THE CHURCH INTO SCHISM

The pride of power contributed to the division of the Church.

1054 – The Great Schism

EVERY FALL BEGINS WITH A CHOICE

But every fall can end with repentance.

Return. Healing. Resurrection.

“Where sin increased, grace increased all the more.”
(Romans 5:20)

✝️ God warned.
❤️ Humanity chose.
👑 Power corrupts.
✝️ Grace restores.

A reminder that human history is filled with falls, but the door of return to God remains open.

Black magic in kongo

Black   We welcome Father Damaskinos from Cyprus. He is a monk and a missionary in Africa. Father, we welcome you, and we would like to hear some of your experiences from Africa.

Thank you. First of all, I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to be here in Cyprus, the land of holy people.

As far as magic is concerned, the situation among the people there is catastrophic. There is no love between people.

One time, I asked someone who was carrying a small wooden figure: “Why do you have this with you?” He answered me: “With this, I protect myself and my family from the magic of other people.” He placed all his faith in this small wooden figure.

When we baptize people there, we explain to them that they must remove these magical objects from themselves. One person was not convinced to take it off. No matter how much we tried to put him in the water to baptize him, he was unable to enter. An invisible demonic force was pushing him away.

Eventually, he was baptized, but he had not truly accepted the faith. When he was in church to receive Holy Communion, he fell down and had convulsions, like an epileptic seizure. We explained to him the reasons why this happened, but he did not want to listen, and he died without confessing the truth.

One day, I was with a priest there, and we saw a naked girl. The priest said to me: “This girl is a magician. She came from another village far away.”

I asked: “How did she come here from such a distance?”

The priest answered: “You do not know. She came flying through the air.”

According to what was believed there, in order to succeed in magic, she had taken a small child, torn out the heart, and drunk the blood. In this way, they believed that demons held magicians in the air and allowed them to fly.

Another time, Father James was in Africa and asked a magician: “How do you harm people?”

The magician said: “Look, I touch them and I cause them problems.”

Father James replied: “Do the same to me.”

The magician answered: “I cannot touch you. You, the Orthodox priest, are full of fire.”

Another time, a man believed to be possessed by a demon went to a Catholic priest to ask him to cast the demon out of him. According to the story, the demon inside the man said to the Catholic priest: “You are a Capuchin. Do you think I can hear you?”

The speaker then says that, according to his belief, Catholics do not have divine grace.

Now I will tell you another story.

Three former magicians went and were baptized without confessing their sins first. According to the story, the demons said to them: “We do not care what you have done, but do not mention it to Father Meletios.”

Before being baptized, these three men had killed a woman and her two children. Someone witnessed this, found others, and they went to kill this former magician.

The former magician then made a deal with the demons, saying: “If someone kills me, I want you to reveal to my family who my killers are.”

They took him to bury him. According to the story, an invisible force did not allow the coffin to be buried. The coffin pulled the men who were carrying it in another direction, leading them to the house of the people who had killed the former magician, in order to reveal who the murderers were.

At the funeral, everyone was frightened. They did not know what to do. The dead man appeared to begin breathing inside the coffin, and his son started speaking to him, believing that his father was alive, although he was not.

After the murderers were revealed and everyone became afraid, his son came to me asking for help. I brought another priest with me to bury him.

Everyone who was there was very frightened. After they saw what we did, how we prayed according to the Orthodox tradition, and how we prayed for the repose of the man’s soul and buried him, they believed that we had greater spiritual power than magic in kongo
