Όλη η αλήθεια για τους Τουρκοκυπρίους

Όταν ο Λαλά Μουσταφά εισέβαλε το καλοκαίρι του 1570 από την ακτή της Λάρνακας επικεφαλής του οθωμανικού στόλου με 180 χιλιάδες ασκέρι, δεν είχε Τούρκους να τον υποδεχτεί στην προκυμαία.

Αποβιβάστηκε, προχωρούσε και έσφαζε όποιον δεν έπεφτε γονυπετής για να τον προσκυνήσει. Πέρασε εύκολα στα περίχωρα της Λευκωσίας και στρατοπέδευσε στη Νήσου και στη γύρω περιοχή, για να οργανώσει την τελική του επίθεση.

Οι Ενετοί, που βασίλευαν τότε σε όλη την Κύπρο, περίμεναν την εισβολή και ήταν ο χειρότερος τους εφιάλτης. Χάλασαν εκκλησίες, παλιά κτίσματα και παραπήγματα και με ταχύτατους ρυθμούς μέσα σε μια τριετία έκτισαν τα τείχη της Λευκωσίας. Όσα πρόλαβαν να κτίσουν, δηλαδή, γιατί μόνο το πρώτο διάζωμα ολοκλήρωσαν όταν τους βρήκε η επίθεση των οθωμανών. Περιμάζεψαν την πόλη, για να μπορεί να αποκρούσει επίθεση, και σχεδίαζαν ν' ανεγείρουν ακόμη ένα δεύτερο διάζωμα τειχών, αλλά δεν πρόλαβαν. Το οχυρωματικό έργο το σχεδίασε ο Πάολο Σαρβοράνο, ο αρχισχεδιαστής των οχυρωματικών των Ενετών στις διάφορες μεσογειακές κτήσεις τους. Ήταν ο ίδιος άνθρωπος που σχεδίασε και τα οχυρωματικά του Ηρακλείου Κρήτης και άλλου.

Εκτροπή του Πεδιαίου και υδάτινη τάφρος

Στο σχεδιασμό οι Ενετοί πραγματοποίησαν εκτροπή της κοίτης του Πεδιαίου και επιχείρησαν, αν ήταν δυνατό, να γεμίσουν την τάφρο με νερό. Ήθελαν να γίνει ακόμη πιο δύσκολο το εγχείρημα των επίδοξων πορθητών της πόλης. Δεν πρόλαβαν να κάνουν πολλά πράγματα: το οθωμανικό λεφούσι διψούσε για νέες κτήσεις και αίμα.

Ο αγώνας ήταν ανελέητος. Τα αλλεπάλληλα γιουρούσια των φανατικών του Ισλάμ ανακόπτονταν από τα γενικά κανόνια και οι υπερασπιστές άλλαζαν βάρδιες για έναν και πλέον μήνα στους προμαχώνες. Στο τάφρο του Μπαϊρακτάρη, όπου και το σχετικό σημείο σήμερα, έσπασε η γραμμή. Ο σημαιοφόρος κατάφερε και ανέβηκε τα τείχη, καρφώνοντας το μπαϊράκι. Το είδαν αυτό τα λεφούσια της Ανατολίας και όρμηξαν πατώντας μέσα στην πόλη και στα μετόπισθεν των ηρωικών Ενετών μαχητών. Ο Μπαϊρακτάρης σκοτώθηκε επιτόπου, αλλά η ζημία έγινε. Οι οθωμανοί, που διψούσαν για αίμα, βιασμούς και κλοπές, μπήκαν στη Λευκωσία. Το μπαρούτι είχε τελειώσει στους ηρωικούς μαχητές και το τέλος είχε φτάσει για όλες τις αριστοκρατικές, και όχι μόνο, τις οικογένειες της πόλης. Τα οθωμανικά σπαθιά δούλευαν ακατάπαυστα. Έφιπποι και πεζοί αλαλάζοντες εισβολείς αποκεφάλιζαν όποιον συναντούσαν.

Περιγραφή Άγγλου περιηγητή

Είναι χαρακτηριστική περιγραφή Άγγλου περιηγητή της εποχής, που είχε εγκλωβιστεί στην πόλη και επιβίωσε της σφαγής:

«... Έτρεχε η δόγια μαζί με την κυρία της στο δρόμο για να κρυφτεί, όταν ένα τουρκικό χαντζάρι έκοψε τον άνεμο και το κεφάλι της κυρά της, που στριφογύρισε σαν μπάλα στον αέρα. Η δόγια σταμάτησε, άνοιξε την ποδιά της, το πήρε και έτρεχε μαζί με το κομμένο κεφάλι της κυρά της για να κρυφτεί. Δεν πρόλαβε να κάνει πολλά βήματα, όταν και την ίδια καρατόμησε η οθωμανική οργή. Ούτε δόγιες, δούλες, ούτε αρχόντισσες, ούτε νέους, γέρους ή μικρά παιδιά ενετικής καταγωγής λυπήθηκαν οι εισβολείς. Η διαταγή ήταν «σκοτώστε τους όλους».

Μαζί τους υλοποιήθηκε και τοπικός, Έλληνες της Κύπρου, που ήταν στην υπηρεσία των αρχόντων τους. Ο περισσότερος ελληνικός πληθυσμός διεσώθη, μαζί και κάποιοι Ενετοί που έφυγαν στα υψώματα και στην κεντρική Κύπρο. Οι δρόμοι της πόλης, επιμένουν οι ξένες πηγές, βάφτηκαν κόκκινοι από το αίμα που έτρεξε. Σε αναλογία πληθυσμού, η σφαγή χαρακτηρίζεται μεγαλύτερη από εκείνην της άλωσης της Πόλης (Κωνσταντινούπολης).

Πολύ χειρότερα ακολούθησαν στην Αμμόχωστο, με την εκτέλεση του Μαρκαντώνιου Βραγαδίνου και όλης της ενετικής αριστοκρατίας, παρά τη συμφωνία που έγινε να παραδώσουν την πόλη και να φύγουν μαζί με τις γαλέρες τους.

Πώς προήλθαν οι Τουρκοκύπριοι

Οι οθωμανοί κυρίευσαν την Κύπρο το 1571 και ήταν φανερό ότι δεν υπήρχε τότε τουρκικό στοιχείο στο νησί. Μετά την κυριαρχία τους και την εξόντωση των Ενετών, χώρισαν την επικράτεια σε πασαλίκια κι άφησαν μικρές ολιγάριθμες φρουρές για να τα επιτηρήσουν. Ο στόλος, μαζί με τον κύριο όγκο του ασκεριού (στρατού), απέπλευσε για άλλους. Το ερώτημα που πλανιέται είναι πού βρέθηκαν σήμερα τόσοι Τουρκοκύπριοι, πώς προέκυψαν και αποτελούν σήμερα μέρος του προβλήματος της Κύπρου.

Για την παρουσία τους υπάρχουν πολλές θεωρίες και ερμηνείες, από διάσπαρτες ιστορικές πηγές.

Επρόκειτο για άτομα που αλλαξοπίστησαν από την ελληνική και μαρωνιτική κοινότητα της, για να γλιτώσουν τις επαχθείς φορολογίες και για να έχουν την Κύπρο της άρχουσας τάξης. Τα άτομα αυτά προσαρμόζονταν ανάλογα με τις πολιτικές εποχές και τους καιρούς.

Ο Παναγιώτης Χατζηδημητρίου γράφει ότι σημαντικό ποσοστό των λεγόμενων λινοβάμβακων αποτελεί σήμερα μεγάλο μέρος της τουρκοκυπριακής κοινότητας. Όπως εξηγεί, οι Κύπριοι αυτοί έχουν τις ίδιες καταβολές μαζί με τους Ελληνοκυπρίους. Επισημαίνει ότι απόδειξη τούτου είναι τα πολλά τουρκοκυπρικά χωριά με ονόματα αγίων.

Ο Φαίδωνας Θ. Παπαδόπουλος, Δρ Θεολογίας - θρησκειολόγος, αναλύει το θέμα των λινοβάμβακων - κρυπτοχριστιανών της Κύπρου, οι οποίοι, λόγω των αβάστακτων φορολογιών και άλλων πιέσεων επί οθωμανικής κατοχής, δήλωναν μουσουλμάνοι. Ωστόσο, όταν η Κύπρος πέρασε στην αγγλική αποικιοκρατία, ένα μεγάλο ποσοστό των λινοβάμβακων επανεντασσόταν ομαδικά στη χριστιανική ορθόδοξη κοινότητα της Κύπρου. Η πολιτική των βρετανικών αποικιοκρατικών Αρχών, η διαμάχη στους κόλπους της Εκκλησίας της Κύπρου για τον αρχιεπισκοπικό θρόνο και άλλους παράγοντες, έπαιξαν σημαντικό ρόλο στη διακοπή της επανένταξης των λινοβάμβακων στη χριστιανική κοινότητα.

Κοινές ρίζες

Οι συνθήκες επί της Αγγλοκρατίας δεν επέτρεψαν να επανέλθουν στη χριστιανική κοινότητα όλοι οι κρυπτοχριστιανοί, γνωστοί ως λινοβάμβακοι.

Σε δύο βιβλία του Δρα Θεολογίας - θρησκειολόγου Φαίδωνα Παπαδόπουλου παρουσιάζεται τεκμηριωμένα η σύνθεση του κυπριακού πληθυσμού.

Οι λινοβάμβακοι μαζικά, με τον έλεγχο της Κύπρου από την Αγγλία, επέστρεψαν στη χριστιανική κοινότητα. Σε κάποιες κοινότητες, στην απογραφή, οι κάτοικοι παρουσιάζονται ως μουσουλμάνοι και στην επόμενη απογραφή ως χριστιανοί. Χιλιάδες κάτοικοι της Κύπρου δήλωναν μουσουλμάνοι στο θρήσκευμα και ως μητρική γλώσσα την ελληνική.

Υπάρχουν παραδείγματα κοινοτήτων, όπου μαζικά οι κάτοικοι επέστρεψαν στο Χριστιανισμό. Τέτοια χωριά, σύμφωνα με τη Δρα Φαίδωνα Παπαδόπουλο και τη μελέτη του, συναντιούνται κατά κύριο λόγο στην επαρχία Λεμεσού, όπως τα χωριά Ακρούντα, Άγιος Τύχωνας, Μαθηκολώνη, Μοναγρούλι, Παλώδια, Φασούλα, Φοινικάρια, Πύργος, Πάνω Κυβίδες και Λιμνίτης. Στην επαρχία Λευκωσίας αναφέρονται τα χωριά Βαρίσια, Λυθροδόντας και Ευρύχου. Στην επαρχία Λάρνακας τα χωριά Λιβάδια και Χοιροκοιτία. Στην επαρχία Πάφου τα χωριά Μαμώνια και Κρήτου - Μαρόττου και στην επαρχία Αμμοχώστου στο χωριό Λιοπέτρι. Καταγράφονται επίσης μεγάλα ποσοστά πληθυσμού που εντάσσονται στη χριστιανική πίστη από πολλές άλλες κοινότητες.

Οι λινοβάμβακοι

Η ονομασία λινοβάμβακος , σύμφωνα με τον κ. Παπαδόπουλο, προέρχεται από το ρούχο με δύο όψεις, τη βαμβακερή και τη λινή. Η βαμβακερή εξωτερική πλευρά καταδεικνύει τη φαινομενική πλευρά των κρυπτοχριστιανών και η εσωτερική πλευρά της κρυφής θρησκευτικής ταυτότητας.

Ο κ. Ο Παπαδόπουλος έχει εκδώσει και δύο βιβλία που αναφέρονται στους λινοβάμβακους της Κύπρου, στα οποία παρουσιάζονται πολύ σημαντικά ντοκουμέντα. Πρόκειται για τα βιβλία «Τούρκοι, μουσουλμάνοι ή κρυπτοχριστιανοί (λινοβάμβακοι); Γνωριμία με το σύνοικο στοιχείο», «Η εδαφική και πληθυσμιακή πτυχή του κυπριακού προβλήματος, Χάρτες και ποσοστά υπό το φως της Ιστορίας».

Στα δύο βιβλία παρουσιάζονται έγγραφα και ντοκουμέντα απογραφής πληθυσμού, όπου ο πληθυσμός σε κάποια χωριά, οι κάτοικοι στην ολότητά τους παρουσιάζονται με θρήσκευμα μουσουλμανικό και στην επόμενη απογραφή με χριστιανικό θρήσκευμα. Δημοσιεύεται επίσης επιστολή κατοίκων των χωριών Αμπέλια και Πύργος στην περιοχή της Τηλλυρίας, ημερομηνίας 6/1/1882, όπου κάτοικοι ζητούν από το Διοικητή Λευκωσίας επί Αγγλοκρατίας, να εγγραφούν στους καταλόγους των χριστιανών.

Ντοκουμέντο

Το φαινόμενο της επιστροφής λινοβάμβακων παρουσιάζεται ιδιαίτερα στην περιοχή της Τηλλυρίας, η οποία κατά κοινή ομολογία χαρακτηρίζετο ως λινοβαμβακική. Αυτούσια η επιστολή των λινοβάμβακων των χωριών Αμπέλια και Πύργος Τηλλυρίας, προς το διοικητή Λευκωσίας, παρατίθεται πιο κάτω:

«Ενδοξότατε Διοικητά της Λευκωσίας κύριε Ίγγλις

Οι ευσεβάστως υποφαινόμενοι λινοβάμβακοι του χωριού Αμπέλια και του Πύργου Τηλλυρίας του διαμερίσματος Λεύκας παρουσιαζόμεθα διά της παρούσης ημών ταπεινής αναφοράς ίνα φέρωμεν εις γνώση της Υμ. Ενδοξότητος ότι έως τώρα όντες χριστιανοί ορθώδοξοι εν τω κρυπτώ διά τον φόβον των διοικούντων την Κύπρο Τούρκων, αναγκαζόμεθα εν τω φανερώ να φαινόμεθα μωαμεθανοί. Ήδη δε διατελούντες υπό την ελευθέραν και ανεξίθρησκον κυβέρνησιν της Σεπτής Ανάσσης του Μεγάλου Αγγλικού έθνους ενθαρρυνόμεθα να μην κρύβονται τα θρησκευτικά πεποιθήσεις ημών και να δηλώνουμε ότι από αυτό θέλουμε να πρεσβεύουμε φανερά την Χριστιανικήν. Ευλπιστούμεν ενδοξότατε ότι η παράκλησις μας θέλει εισακουσθή παρ' υμών, και θέλετε να διατάξετε τα δέοντα, διατελούμεν της υμετέρας ενδοξότητος ταπεινοί δούλοι.

Η διακοπή της επανένταξης

Με βάση τα στοιχεία που παρουσιάζει ο κ. Παπαδόπουλος, το διάστημα 1878-1914 αποτελεί το χρονικό πλαίσιο στο οποίο έχουν συνταχθεί οι σχετικές με την κοινότητα των λινοβαμβακών ζυμώσεων και ιδίως εκείνες οι οποίες παρουσίασαν μαζικό χαρακτήρα. Κατά το διάστημα αυτών των κοινοτήτων, οι οποίες εφέροντο ως μουσουλμανικές, λινοβαμβακικές ή μεικτές, επέστρεψαν οριστικά στον Χριστιανισμό, άλλες παρέμειναν οριστικά στο Ισλάμ. Το φαινόμενο της επιστροφής στη Χριστιανική Κοινότητα πήρε τέτοιες διαστάσεις, σε σημείο ώστε η σημαντική εξέλιξη να ήταν η επανένταξη του συνόλου των λινοβαμβάκων στην ορθόδοξη κοινότητα. Αυτό όμως δεν έχει συμβεί, και σύμφωνα με το Δρα Παπαδόπουλο οι βασικοί λόγοι είναι:

- Η προσπάθεια επιστροφής των λινοβαμβάκων δεν είχε πάντοτε την πρέπουσα στήριξη από μέρους των μελών και της ηγεσίας της ορθόδοξης κοινότητας, με αποτέλεσμα να βρει πρόσφορο έδαφος εκ μέρους των μουσουλμάνων προσπάθειας συγκράτησης των εν λόγω στο Μωαμεθανισμό. Όλα αυτά συνέπεσαν και με τις έριδες στην Εκκλησία της Κύπρου όσον αφορά τη διαμάχη για τον αρχιεπισκοπικό θρόνο.

- Η βρετανική διοίκηση, για πολιτικούς λόγους, όχι μόνο δεν ενεθάρρυνε την επανάληψη των λινοβαμβάκων, αλλά τουναντίον έπραξε ό,τι ήτο δυνατόν για να την αποθαρρύνει. Βασικό εμπόδιο ήταν η γραφειοκρατία.

- Σημαντικός αριθμός λινοβαμβάκων, λόγω στράτευσης ή μεικτών γάμων και γενικά λόγω πολυετών διαβίωσης υπό μουσουλμανικό μανδύα, έκλεισε τελικά προς το Ισλάμ.

- Η αβεβαιότητα σχετικά με το πολιτικό μέλλον της Κύπρου και ιδιαίτερα η φημολογία περί επανόδου των οθωμανών, αποτέλεσε ανακριτικό του φαινομένου της έκφρασης του χριστιανικού φρονήματος των λινοβαμβακών.

Οι αποδείξεις

Δεν είναι η μόνη απόδειξη των ονομάτων Αγίων σε τουρκοκυπριακά χωριά, αλλά και πολλά άλλα στοιχεία, όπως οι πολλές εκκλησιές και ξωκλήσια σε πολλά άλλα τουρκοκυπριακά χωριά. Υπάρχουν ολόκληρες κοινότητες, όπου οι Τουρκοκύπριοι κάτοικοι δεν γνώριζαν άλλη γλώσσα εκτός από την ελληνική. Για παράδειγμα, στην κοινότητα Λουρουτζίνας, στην Επαρχία Λευκωσίας, μέχρι το 1930 οι μαθητές του υποτιθέμενου μουσουλμανικού σχολείου, όπως και οι γονείς τους, μιλούσαν ελληνικά και σε περίπτωση δυσκολιών τους ή τραυματισμού τους επικαλούσαν την Παναγία. Αποκλειστικά την ελληνική γλώσσα μιλούσαν και στο τουρκοκυπριακό χωριό Γαληνόπορνη στην Καρπασία. Και σήμερα ακόμη υπάρχουν ηλικιωμένοι Τουρκοκύπριοι που η μοναδική γλώσσα που γνωρίζουν είναι τα ελληνικά. Αξιοσημείωτο είναι το γεγονός ότι σε απογραφή που έγινε,

Επί Αγγλοκρατίας η Εκκλησία είχε βοηθήσει σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις κοινοτήτων και ατόμων λινοβαμβάκων, για να επανέλθουν στη χριστιανική κοινότητα. Στα πλαίσια αυτά υπήρξε βοήθεια για ανέγερση εκκλησιών και σχολείων. Ωστόσο, η προσπάθεια αυτή φαίνεται να μην ήταν καθολική και χωρίς συνέχεια, λόγω, όπως προαναφέραμε, και της κρίσης στους κόλπους της Εκκλησίας.

Η δράση του Εβκάφ

Σημαντική δράση με στόχο τη συγκράτηση των λινοβάκων στον μουσουλμανικό χώρο, στον οποίο ανήκαν θεωρητικά, είχαν αναπτύξει θρησκευτικές και άλλες προσωπικότητες της ισλαμικής κοινότητας. Με την πρωτοβουλία του Εβκάφ και τη συνδρομή εύπορων μουσουλμάνων, κτίστηκαν τεμένη και ιδρύθηκαν σχολεία στα χωριά της Τηλλυρίας.

Ο Δρ Φαίδωνας Παπαδόπουλος υποστηρίζει ότι ελάχιστοι Τουρκοκύπριοι έχουν τις ρίζες τους από τη γεωγραφική περιοχή της Τουρκίας.

Συμπλήρωσε ότι οι μουσουλμάνοι που ήλθαν στην Κύπρο επί οθωμανικής κατοχής προέρχονταν από διάφορες αραβικές χώρες, όπως για παράδειγμα τη Συρία. Ωστόσο, τους επιβλήθηκε τουρκική ταυτότητα με την πάροδο του χρόνου. Βασικός πυρήνας των Τουρκοκυπρίων, όπως υποστηρίζεται, ήταν κρυπτοχριστιανοί - λινοβάμβακοι. Δύσκολο είναι να πεις και τους Τουρκοκυπρίους, μουσουλμάνους της Κύπρου, αφού οι περισσότεροι ως γνωστόν δεν θρησκεύουν και δεν διατηρούν ισλαμικό θρησκευτικό συναίσθημα. Απεναντίας, αρκετοί Τουρκοκύπριοι διατηρούν χριστιανικό θρησκευτικό συναίσθημα.

Χωριά Αγίων και Τουρκοκυπρίων

Σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία των πινάκων απογραφής πληθυσμού του 1960, κατά το έτος αυτό υπήρχαν στην Κύπρο 634 οικισμοί (χωριά), από τους οποίους οι 117 ήταν αμιγώς μουσουλμανικοί (τουρκοκυπριακόι). Αυτό, βέβαια, όπως τονίζει ο κ. Φαίδωνας Παπαδόπουλος, δεν σημαίνει ότι οι συγκεκριμένες κοινότητες ήταν ανέκαθεν μουσουλμανικές. Απεναντίας, υπάρχουν επαρκείς ιστορικές μαρτυρίες, επί τη βάσει των οποίων καταδεικνύεται το χριστιανικό παρελθόν της συντριπτικής πλειοψηφίας τους.

Χαρακτηριστικό είναι και τα αμιγή τουρκοκυπριακά χωριά με ονόματα αγίων. Στην επαρχία Λευκωσίας τα χωριά Άγιος Επιφάνιος Σολέας, Άγιος Θεόδωρος Τηλλυρίας, Άγιος Ιωάννης Σελεμάνι, στην επαρχία Λεμεσού Άγιος Θωμάς, στην επαρχία Αμμοχώστου Άγιος Ανδρόνικος (Τοπσού Κιογιού), Άγιος Ευστάθιος, Άγιος Ιάκωβος, Επαρχία Άγιος Άγιος Πάγος, Επαρχία Άγιος Άγιος Πάγος, , Άγιος Ιωάννης. Ονόματα Αγίων φέρουν και μεικτά χωριά όπως τα χωριά Αγία Μαρίνα Σκυλλούρας, Άγιος Γεώργιος Λεύκας, Άγιος Σωζόμενος στην επαρχία Λευκωσίας, Άγιος Ανδρόνικος (Καρπασίας), Αγία Άννα, Άγιος Θεόδωρος στην επαρχία Λάρνακας, Αγία Βαρβάρα, Άγιος Νικόλαος Επαρχία. Αγία Ειρήνη, Άγιος Επίκτητος στην επαρχία Κερύνειας.

Ο Τουρκοκύπριος -για χρόνια- ηγέτης Ραούφ Ντενκτάς κατάγεται από χωριό που φέρει το όνομα Αγίου. Πρόκειται για τον Άγιο Επιφάνιο Σολέα, όπου σε αρχική καταγραφή πληθυσμού η συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των κατοίκων παρουσιάζονται ως χριστιανοί. Σε επόμενη απογραφή όλοι οι κάτοικοι είναι δηλωμένοι οθωμανοί.

Φιντέλ Κάστρο

Φιντέλ Κάστρο να δούμε εδώ με τα μάτια του, κοιτάζοντας προς τα πάνω σαν τον Ιησού και δείχνει προς τα κάτω στο θεό των Ελευθεροτεκτόνων τη διατήρηση διαβολοu.lΤα παιδιά της Lucifer, η λέξη «Λούσιφερ» σημαίνει "ΦΩΣ στον ΚΟΜΙΣΤΉ, έτσι ώστε η Τέκτονες είναι τα "παιδιά του φωτός "ή, στην πραγματικότητα," τα παιδιά των-δαιμονίων .Τεκτόνων .μόνο πέντε τοις εκατό ξέρετε -Τεκτόνων, έχουν να κάνουν με το διάβολο.= για την επίτευξη του στόχου τους, να παραδώσει το σύνολο της ανθρωπότητας, με το διάβολο.Στη συνέχεια πρώτος ηγέτης έρχεται =θα ξεφορτωθεί όλους εσάς, ηλίθιοι γιατί δεν θα σαs χρειάζεστε άλλο .Οι Τέκτονες πιστεύουν πλέον στο δικό τους απρόσωπο Θεό που ονομάζεται ΜΑΤΣ, ότι =Μέγας Αρχιτέκτων του Σύμπαντος. First of all, I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to be here in Cyprus, the land of holy people. As far as magic is concerned, the situation among the people there is catastrophic. There is no love between people. One time, I asked someone who was carrying a small wooden figure: “Why do you have this with you?” He answered me: “With this, I protect myself and my family from the magic of other people.” He placed all his faith in this small wooden figure. When we baptize people there, we explain to them that they must remove these magical objects from themselves. One person was not convinced to take it off. No matter how much we tried to put him in the water to baptize him, he was unable to enter. An invisible demonic force was pushing him away. Eventually, he was baptized, but he had not truly accepted the faith. When he was in church to receive Holy Communion, he fell down and had convulsions, like an epileptic seizure. We explained to him the reasons why this happened, but he did not want to listen, and he died without confessing the truth. One day, I was with a priest there, and we saw a naked girl. The priest said to me: “This girl is a magician. She came from another village far away.” I asked: “How did she come here from such a distance?” The priest answered: “You do not know. You, the Orthodox priest, are full of fire.” Another time, a man believed to be possessed by a demon went to a Catholic priest to ask him to cast the demon out of him. According to the story, the demon inside the man said to the Catholic priest: “You are a Capuchin. Do you think I can hear you?” The speaker then says that, according to his belief, Catholics do not have divine grace. Now I will tell you another story. Three former magicians went and were baptized without confessing their sins first. According to the story, the demons said to them: “We do not care what you have done, but do not mention it to Father Meletios.” Before being baptized, these three men had killed a woman and her two children. Someone witnessed this, found others, and they went to kill this former magician. The former magician then made a deal with the demons, saying: “If someone kills me, I want you to reveal to my family who my killers are.” They took him to bury him. Abdul Hamid gave the order for the tomb of Mehmed the Conqueror, which was located next to the mosque, to be opened in order to check for any damage and make repairs. The tomb was opened, and at a depth of three meters, an iron trapdoor was found. From there, a stone staircase led down into the underground chamber of a Byzantine church. There, to their astonishment, the workers found a marble tomb containing the embalmed body of Mehmed—identical to the portrait painted by the Italian artist a few months before his death. This fact—that Mehmed was buried within the ruins of a Byzantine church—has been considered by many as strong evidence that he wished to be buried as a Christian and Byzantine emperor, among the other Byzantine rulers. It is known that Mehmed often claimed to be the successor of the Byzantine emperors. Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who, for political reasons at the time, had abandoned a certain Islamic sect he had followed and had adopted Sunni Islam, was seized with panic and ordered the tomb to be immediately sealed. These events took place before 1908, and since then, the tomb has never been opened again. For this reason, it is difficult today to verify the testimony. However, on December 19, 1996, a Turkish weekly publication associated with the well-known newspaper Sabah was released with the striking headline: “The Conqueror was a Christian.” The subtitle read: “Historians have not been able to solve this mystery to this day.” Many centuries after the death of the great Fatih—Mehmed the Conqueror, as he is historically known—it is also known that he had a Christian mother, most likely of Greek origin. The fact that in modern Turkey—where Islamic identity is strongly re-emerging—such reports are published is seen by some as evidence of doubt about Mehmed’s true religious identity, even within the official Turkish establishment. This becomes even more significant when we consider that Fatih Mehmed is one of the greatest taboos of Turkish history, nationalism, and identity. A leader like him was expected to embody not only national pride but also religious identity. And yet, inside his tomb, it is claimed, lies one of the greatest secrets of the Ottoman Empire. There were testimonies stating that next to the tomb there was a cross and an icon of the Virgin Mary. According to these claims, Mehmed the Conqueror may have embraced Christianity at the end of his life—something carefully concealed by official Turkish historiography. From his early childhood, he had contact with Christianity through his Christian mother. It is one of the great historical mysteries how a relatively small number of Seljuk Turks and Ottomans who arrived in Asia Minor between the 9th and 10th centuries managed, within a few centuries, to change the entire ethnic and religious character of a region inhabited by millions—many say up to 20 million—Greek-speaking Orthodox Christians. There are many explanations. Some say it was forced Islamization through violence, while others say it occurred for practical and economic reasons. However, because this process of religious conversion was often incomplete and superficial, a unique characteristic remained within Turkish Islam—one that some consider a heterodox element. Today, this is being increasingly discussed by Turkish journalists and researchers under the term “the religious problem of modern Turkey.” On November 10, 2002, a Turkish newspaper reported that the feast of Saint Nektarios was celebrated inside a Muslim mosque—formerly a Christian church—in Eastern Thrace. Many Turkish Muslims stayed after their prayers to observe the Christian service with great reverence. Similarly, there are reports of Turkish Muslims attending Christian ceremonies, lighting candles, kissing priests’ hands, and seeking blessings from the Virgin Mary. In some cases, even Muslims from other countries, such as Iran and Iraq, visit Orthodox churches in Istanbul, seeking hope, healing, and help for their personal struggles. Some Turkish women have even been reported diving into the water during the Epiphany ceremony to catch the cross—an act deeply rooted in Orthodox Christian tradition. Other reports mention Muslims visiting churches regularly, praying, lighting candles, and asking for miracles. Turkish newspapers have even described certain churches as “places of hope” for Muslims. In recent years, there has also been an increase in conversions to Christianity in Turkey, often among people who later discover they have Christian ancestry. Investigations revealed that many of these individuals had ancestors who were Islamized, especially after the Asia Minor catastrophe, and later rediscovered their Christian roots. There are also remarkable accounts of healing sites, such as sacred springs associated with early Christianity, where both Turks and foreigners visit for healing. In some places, visitors light candles, burn incense, and perform acts that are officially forbidden in Islam. Despite this, such practices continue and are even broadcast on Turkish television. One striking example is the pilgrimage to Saint George on the island of Büyükada, where tens of thousands of Muslim Turks visit the church, light candles, make vows, and seek blessings. Some even walk barefoot up the hill to the church, tying threads along the path as part of a ritual for their wishes. Priests are seen blessing Muslim visitors, sometimes even making the sign of the cross on their foreheads. Finally, there was a mysterious event reported in 1998 on the island of Antigoni, where a strange, sorrowful sound—like a sigh—was heard every night around a church. Residents were alarmed and unable to explain it. Some interpreted it as a supernatural sign, even suggesting it was a message from the Virgin Mary—a lament for the state of the world and the abandonment of faith. The church, once full of Orthodox believers, now stands nearly empty. And this sorrowful “voice” was seen by some as a symbol of that loss.

🇬🇧 ENGLISH TEXT THE EMBRYOS ARE ALIVE? IT’S PROOFED. Some people went to FATHER PAISIOS and told him that a nun in Cyprus said to light candles for the unborn babies that their mothers kill. And they were shouting: “SAVE US, GOD, MY GOD SAVE US!” Father Paisios then asked another monk who was close to him: “Who are these that are shouting-screaming?” He was told: “These are the unborn innocent babies that mothers and doctors, without their will, have lost. Because they are unbaptized, they go to a place where the devils are not allowed to tempt them, because they are innocent. But it is dark, it is not paradise, it is darkness.” When Father Paisios woke up he told the people: “There ARE embryos and there IS a soul. Yes, you must light candles for the EMBRYOS. Because there is a soul.” ⸻ LET’S UNDERSTAND: A man approaches a woman and fertilization is done. The sperm of the man is alive — if it was dead, it would not fertilize. So it is alive. From the moment of fertilization the baby receives a soul. Fertilization = living soul + living body. The soul is the breath of God. It is a living being. So there must be respect for the EMBRYOS. ⸻ 🇬🇷 ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ ΤΑ ΕΜΒΡΥΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΖΩΝΤΑΝΑ; ΕΧΕΙ ΑΠΟΔΕΙΧΘΕΙ. Δεν υπάρχουν αγέννητα παιδιά στον παράδεισο, ΤΑ ΕΜΒΡΥΑ ΕΧΟΥΝ ΧΑΘΕΙ!» Τη νύχτα είδε ένα όνειρο… Καθώς περπατούσε άκουγε φωνές μικρών μωρών, πολλές φωνές, και ο τόπος σειόταν. Πάνω τους υπήρχε άμμος με κεριά και κάτω από τα κεριά ακούγονταν οι φωνές των μωρών. Και φώναζαν: «ΣΩΣΕ ΜΑΣ ΘΕΕ, ΘΕΕ ΜΟΥ ΣΩΣΕ ΜΑΣ!» Ο Άγιος Παΐσιος ρώτησε έναν άλλο μοναχό που ήταν κοντά του: «Ποιοι είναι αυτοί που φωνάζουν;» Του απάντησαν: «Είναι τα αγέννητα αθώα παιδιά που οι μητέρες και οι γιατροί, χωρίς να το θέλουν, τα χάνουν. Επειδή είναι αβάπτιστα πηγαίνουν σε έναν τόπο όπου οι δαίμονες δεν μπορούν να τα πειράξουν, γιατί είναι αθώα. Αλλά είναι σκοτάδι, δεν είναι παράδεισος.» Όταν ο Άγιος Παΐσιος ξύπνησε είπε στους ανθρώπους: «Υπάρχουν έμβρυα και υπάρχει ψυχή. Ναι, πρέπει να ανάβετε κεριά για τα ΕΜΒΡΥΑ. Γιατί υπάρχει ψυχή.» ⸻ Ας καταλάβουμε: Ένας άντρας πλησιάζει μια γυναίκα και γίνεται η γονιμοποίηση. Το σπέρμα είναι ζωντανό — αν ήταν νεκρό δεν θα γινόταν γονιμοποίηση. Άρα είναι ζωντανό. Από τη στιγμή της γονιμοποίησης το μωρό λαμβάνει ψυχή. Γονιμοποίηση = ζωντανή ψυχή + ζωντανό σώμα. Η ψυχή είναι η πνοή του Θεού. Είναι ζωντανό ον. Άρα πρέπει να υπάρχει σεβασμός στα ΕΜΒΡΥΑ.

Δεν λέω ότι ξέρεις ήδη την απάντηση. Αλλά αν δεν υπάρχει Θεός, τότε μένουν κάποια ερωτήματα που πρέπει να σταθούν μόνα τους. Πώς προέκυψε ένα σύμπαν με νόμους που δεν αλλάζουν; Γιατί η ύλη υπακούει σε μαθηματική τάξη; Πώς από απλή ύλη εμφανίζεται συνείδηση — η εμπειρία του “εγώ”; Και γιατί ο άνθρωπος δεν ψάχνει μόνο το “πώς”, αλλά και το “γιατί”; Δεν λέω ότι η απάντηση είναι εύκολη. Λέω όμως ότι η ερώτηση δεν εξαφανίζεται. Και ίσως τελικά, το ζήτημα δεν είναι ποιος “πιστεύει”. Αλλά ποιος αντέχει να δει ότι δεν έχουν εξηγηθεί όλα. — I’m not saying you already have the answer. But if there is no God, then some questions still remain. How did a universe governed by consistent laws come into existence? Why does matter follow mathematical order? How does mere matter give rise to consciousness — the experience of “I”? And why does human thought search not only for “how”, but for “why”? I’m not claiming the answer is easy. I’m saying the question doesn’t go away. And maybe the issue is not who “believes”. But who is willing to admit that not everything is explained.

When you die, my child, many will fight against the priests. And the high priests will not allow any priest to speak on his own—only what they tell him. The high priests will begin writing the sermons, and the priests will simply have to read them. In that time, they will even remove the cross from the sanctuaries. When you see these things, know that the great evil has begun. Priests will no longer be free to speak easily. That is why I will give my spirit to simple children, to boys and girls. After your death, many will want to learn what you said, and the evil one will begin to distort your words in order to bring confusion into people’s minds. Sadly, because our Church is poor, it is controlled by foreign money, and behind it stands the Vatican. That is why, it is said, all the church leaders have been given a noose. God says they have been given a noose and are being pulled like dogs. Soon there will be a new and great evil in the Church, unlike anything before, and the whole Church will be shaken as if by a massive earthquake. It will not be a normal earthquake, but something far greater. At that time, all people, all Christians, will not know where to go or what to do. But remember what Christ says: in My name you were baptized as Christians; in My name you became priests. I will be your true Father of the Church. And remember that the Church is not the buildings that are constructed but your hearts. Time will pass, and people will come to understand who truly governs the world. Then they will see how harsh and evil the Antichrist is. If they do not make the sign of the cross, how will I bless them and remove the poisons placed in their bodies? When they do not have holy water, they will take ordinary water. They will not say “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” yet I will bless that water, and when they drink it, their bodies will be blessed, and their minds will be cleansed.

Every Thursday and Friday—except, as I told you, for the 40 days after Epiphany—it cannot be performed on September 14th, which is the Feast of the Holy Cross. People would very often ask you to destroy others, especially in matters of inheritance involving large fortunes. Unfortunately, as I remember, during the periods of Holy Thursday and Holy Friday—when major magical rituals take place—even a person could be killed through magic. Of course, there are certain conditions that people should know: if God does not allow it, nothing can happen. For someone to be affected—even to the point of death—they must already be spiritually indifferent, hardened, and have rejected Christ from their heart. That is, they have completely turned away and placed themselves in the hands of the devil. So, if God allows it, and at some point it becomes evident—even to us—that death will occur, then there is a ritual that can be performed, and within 24 hours the person may die. —Have you performed such a ritual in an apartment in Athens? —Yes, of course. —Did your teacher only remove spells, or also cast them? —Mostly he cast them. And to tell the truth, he never removed them, because he couldn’t. He even told me that—“we can never undo them,” because that belongs to a higher authority, namely the Church. There were also periods he mentioned to me personally, when I myself was not well—I felt like I was going insane. This was during the period of Epiphany, from the day of Epiphany and for 40 days afterward, because of the great religious event of Christ’s baptism and the sanctification of the waters. All this, as Maros used to say, is why we protected ourselves and endured it by taking pills—sedatives and painkillers—because we had terrible pain, headaches, and a state of mental disturbance during that period. —How is this explained? —As I said, it can be explained better by the Church. It is the great gift that God gives to people—especially Orthodox Christians—through the sanctification that takes place. At that time, all spells are broken as a sign of God’s gift because of the baptism of His Son. That is, even if you had cast spells on someone, everything would be undone. All the written charms, all the bindings—everything would turn to nothing, like ashes and smoke. And we suffered because of this. What stood out is that during that time, both I personally and Maros—who also confessed this—recognized that Christ is indeed more powerful, and so is the Church. But we still couldn’t leave. —What did you tell your clients? —We told them excuses, because they came with serious complaints. They saw everything turning upside down. Even marriages that had been “achieved” through magic were breaking apart. Forgive me, but marriages were dissolving, along with other matters—inheritance cases and everything else. —Is it possible for someone who works as a medium to have a gift from God and help others? —According to the Orthodox Church, absolutely not, because they cooperate with demons. There are even cases where, at the moment magic or divination is being performed, if Christians are praying or a liturgy is taking place, all their rituals are immobilized. —Does the victim of magic have symptoms, and what are they? —First of all, anyone involved in such practices is cut off from the body of the Church. Secondly, they are exposed to evil spirits that operate within the realm of magic. There are many cases where even the practitioners themselves suffer greatly from the spirits they invoke. In other cases, people fall ill or suffer mental disturbance. —Finally, Father Daniel, how can someone be immune to magic throughout their life? —The way is to live a sacramental life. That is, to be a conscious member of the Church: to have a spiritual father, to confess, to receive Holy Communion, to study Scripture and the writings of the Church Fathers, and so on.

This is a well-known text from the books published about Elder Paisios, Saint Paisios the Athonite. From “Spiritual Awakening” (Discourses II), published by the Holy Hesychasterion of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti, Thessaloniki, around page 188. Listen: a nun once asked Elder Paisios, while he was still alive, “Elder, in these difficult times, will Christ intervene?” It’s the same question people ask today. The same question was asked even before 1994, when he reposed—30 years ago. Even then, people felt the times were difficult. Imagine what he would say about our times today. So the nun asks again: “Elder, in these difficult times, will Christ intervene?” And listen to the vision Paisios had. He was a prophet—not only did he have a prophetic gift (which others also had), but he also had the gift of interpreting prophecy. Here he answers someone who is suffering unjustly but has a good disposition. Because such a person deserves divine help, many times the saints, the Virgin Mary, or Christ Himself appear to save them. How much more now, when the poor world will be in such a difficult state? “What is coming,” he says, “will be like a storm.” Listen carefully—he says the following: “There will be a short ‘occupation’ by the Antichrist, by Satan. Then a ‘slap’ from Christ.” All nations will be shaken, and peace will come to the world for many years. This time, Christ will give an opportunity for His creation to be saved. Will Christ abandon His creation? No. He will appear at humanity’s dead end in order to save people from the hands of the Antichrist. People will return to Christ, and a spiritual peace will come over the whole world for many years. Do you hear what awaits us? These things are said for our own generation. Again—he said this 30 years ago. A spiritual peace will come over the whole world for many years. But first, he says, there will be a shaking of all nations. All nations will be shaken. These are no longer local problems. Notice—they are not national issues; they are global. Some people, he says—pay close attention—connect this intervention of Christ with the Second Coming. “I cannot say that,” he says. See how humble and discerning the saint was. “My thought tells me that this will not be the Second Coming of Christ as Judge, but rather an intervention of Christ.” Because there are still many events that have not yet taken place—he is referring to the events of the Apocalypse. Therefore, we cannot yet speak about the Antichrist in that final sense.

*The vision of Saint Niphon regarding the Second Coming has something to tell all of us, to every class of people, from bishops down to the last layperson. * One night, after the Saint finished his customary nightly prayer, he lay down to sleep on the stones. As always, it was midnight, and he was still keeping vigil, gazing at the moon and the stars in the sky. Alone as he was, he reflected on his sins. What sins? And yet he wept bitterly because he brought to mind the fearful hour of judgment. Suddenly, he sees the firmament of heaven being drawn back like a sheet, and the Lord Jesus Christ appears in enormous proportions. He stood in the air, surrounded by all the heavenly hosts—angels, archangels, and fearsome and exalted ranks arranged in perfect order. The Lord signaled to the commander of one rank, and he approached—radiant, awe-inspiring, yet reverent. “Michael, Michael, prince of the Covenant, take with your rank the fiery throne of My glory and go to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There you shall set it as the first sign of My presence. For the hour is near when each one will receive according to his works. And the moment has quickly come when I will judge those who worshiped idols, the devil, and denied Me, their Creator. All of them will be shattered like vessels, as will My enemies—the heretics who dared to separate Me from My Father, who dared to reduce the Comforter Spirit to a creature. What hell awaits them? Now I will appear to the Jews who crucified Me and did not believe in My divinity. All authority, honor, and power have been given to Me. I am the righteous Judge. When I was on the Cross, they said: ‘He saved others; let Him save Himself.’ Now vengeance is Mine; I will repay. I will judge, I will expose, and I will punish the wicked and perverse generation severely, because it did not repent. I gave them opportunities to repent, but they despised them. Therefore, now I will take vengeance. I will do the same to the Sodomites, to those who commit perversions and who polluted the earth and the air with their stench. I burned them then in Sodom and Gomorrah, and again I will burn them because they defiled the pleasure of the Holy Spirit and loved the pleasure of the devil. I will also punish the adulterers, the foolish and darkened ones who resemble irrational beasts. They were not content with their lawful marriage but foolishly turned to adultery, and Satan cast them bound into the abyss of fire. They did not hear that ‘it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.’ I called them to repentance, yet they did not repent. I will also condemn the thieves who committed many evils, even murders, and all those who committed a multitude of sins. I granted everyone opportunities to change, but they paid me no attention. Where are their good works? I showed them the prodigal son as an example and many others so that they would not despair in their sins, but they despised My commandments and denied Me. They turned away from Me and loved debauchery. They loathed Me and became enslaved to sin. Let them therefore go into the flame which they themselves kindled. But also those who died holding grudges, I will hand over to terrible torment. A resentful person remembers the evil done to him and never forgets it. They did not desire My peace was lost, and I lived in anger, bitterness, and wrath. The greedy, the usurers, and the lovers of money—I will destroy and pour out all My wrath upon them, because they placed their hope in gold and ignored Me, as if I did not know how to care for them. And those false Christians who claimed that there is no resurrection of the dead or that there is reincarnation—I will melt them down to Gehenna like wax. Then they will be convinced of the resurrection of the dead. The poisoners, the sorcerers, and all like them will be tortured mercilessly. “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind”—is a rather daunting theme to talk about, because it is so vast and all-encompassing. It touches on the whole purpose of our lives as Orthodox Christians. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: I have chosen you out of the world (John 15:19). We have been called out of this world in order to become citizens of another world: the Kingdom of God. That Kingdom begins now, in this life, continues after we leave this world, and will reach its consummation at the Second Coming of our Savior. In order to dwell in that Kingdom, to be its citizens, we must be transformed. Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Rom. 12:2). These words from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Romans help to introduce a Divinely inspired teaching on spiritual transformation. In this talk, I will speak first about the theological meaning of transformation in the Orthodox Church. -In Orthodoxy, salvation means not simply changing God’s attitude, but changing ourselves and being changed by God. Salvation ultimately means deification; and deification, as we have seen, entails transformation. It is being united with God ever more fully through His Grace, His Uncreated Energy, in which He is fully present. As we participate ever more fully in God’s life through His Grace, we become ever more deified, ever more in the likeness of Christ. Then, at the time of our departure from this life, we can dwell forever with Christ in His Kingdom because we “look like Him” spiritually, because we are shining with the Grace of God.
