 – St. Paisios on the Departed



The Orthodox faith teaches that death is not the end but a transition to another life. St. Paisios of Mount Athos often spoke about the souls of the departed and how the living can support them. According to him, the souls of our loved ones continue to exist consciously after death. They are aware of our prayers, acts of charity, and the memorial services offered on their behalf.


St. Paisios emphasized that prayer is the most powerful way to aid the departed. When we pray for them, we invite God’s mercy to intervene on their behalf. Even a simple, heartfelt prayer can bring comfort and relief to their souls. Memorial services and lighting candles in their memory also bring great spiritual benefit, as they remind us of our connection to them and keep their memory alive.


Charitable acts performed in honor of the departed are another way to help. Feeding the hungry, giving alms, or helping those in need in the name of our loved ones sends blessings to their souls and expresses our love in a concrete form. St. Paisios reminded that the departed rejoice when they see the living strive to live righteously, offering love and goodness to others.


Ultimately, the joy of the departed is closely tied to our own spiritual life. By living faithfully, performing good deeds, and praying, we not only honor God but also comfort those who have passed. The life of the living and the prayers of the faithful can truly help the departed find rest and peace until the final judgment.

Православная вера учит, что смерть — это не конец, а переход к другой жизни. Святой Паисий Афонский часто говорил о душах усопших и о том, как живущие могут поддерживать их. По его словам, души наших близких продолжают существовать сознательно после смерти. Они чувствуют наши молитвы, добрые дела и поминальные службы, совершаемые в их честь.


Святой Паисий подчеркивал, что молитва — самый сильный способ помочь усопшим. Когда мы молимся за них, мы призываем милость Божию к их душам. Даже простая, искренняя молитва приносит покой и облегчение. Поминальные службы и зажигание свечей в память о них также приносят духовную пользу, напоминая нам о нашей связи с ними и сохраняя их память.


Дела милосердия, совершенные в честь усопших, — еще один способ помощи. Кормление голодных, подаяние или помощь нуждающимся во имя наших близких посылают благословение их душам и выражают нашу любовь в конкретной форме. Archbishop of Cyprus Georgios Believes Saint Paisios Spoke Fairy Tales!


 




Is Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus certain that he does not serve the Turkish narrative? In any case, he is not only denying the prophecy of Saint Paisios, but also the prophecy of Saint Kosmas of Aetolia — the very prophecy Saint Paisios himself interpreted.


When you reject the prophetic voice of the Saints, the pillars of the Church, you are rejecting the Church itself.


Saint Paisios did not speak fairy tales. He was not a storyteller. Others have filled us with lies. He said these things to thousands of people — not all of them were refugees. Nor did he tell them, “We have the power to drive the Turks out right now.”


To the Cypriots, he specifically said they must build spiritual foundations so that the military bases would be removed. For him, the issue of Cyprus was spiritual, not political. He urged everyone to spiritual struggle — to awaken from the sleep of sin so that Greece might attract the grace of God.


This, however, explains the un-Orthodox attitude of the current Primate of the Church of Cyprus.

If the ecumenist Archbishop Georgios truly believed in the Saints, he would not persecute a traditional hierarch who builds the living temples of God, nor would he invite heretics to the holy island of Cyprus.


He unjustly and forcibly persecutes an Orthodox bishop with false accusations.

He distorts and slanders the great Saints of our Church.

He considers the contents of the Holy Canons to be heretical.


Someone deserves to be deposed — and it is certainly not the Orthodox Tychikos.





What the Archbishop Actually Said on RIK (2 July 2025):



Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus:

“When many come today and say, ‘But Saint Paisios said the Turks will leave soon, they already have one foot in the grave,’ that’s how he said it. When desperate people — refugees — came before him, he had to offer them some words of comfort. To console them. And he told them: ‘Wait, they will leave, they will move out.’ These were comforting words. He wasn’t saying that we would drive them out immediately, that we have the strength and power to do so.”


Journalist: “But there are people who believe that — they say, ‘Saint Paisios said the Turks will leave.’”


Archbishop Georgios: “We must give the people the correct interpretation.”




When “correct interpretation” means denying the living tradition of the Church, one must ask — who interprets whom? The Saints interpret history through divine grace, not through diplomacy.


Those who mock the Saints in order to appear “realistic” end up becoming servants of falsehood.


Saint Paisios did not comfort with illusions — he comforted with faith.

When a Shepherd Questions a Saint



When the Archbishop of Cyprus publicly stated on national television that “Saint Paisios spoke comforting words to the refugees — words of consolation”, many faithful were left deeply troubled.

To call the words of a Saint mere “words of comfort” — as if they were human inventions or emotional encouragements — raises serious concern.


A Saint does not speak from imagination.

The Saints are the living vessels of the Holy Spirit; their words carry spiritual authority, born from divine illumination and prophetic grace.

To reduce their prophecies to human “stories of consolation” is not humility — it is spiritual ignorance.


The question is not whether the Archbishop meant to insult Saint Paisios personally.

The true question is: How can the head of a local Church dismiss the prophetic voice that has guided millions of Orthodox believers?

By speaking so carelessly, he risks leading others to doubt the spiritual authenticity of the Saints themselves.

And when the faithful begin to lose trust in the Saints, the very foundation of living Orthodoxy weakens.


Such statements do not arise from theological precision, but from a mindset shaped by rationalism and diplomacy — the desire to appear “reasonable” before the world rather than faithful before God.

Behind this attitude hides a subtle spiritual illness: the fear of offending worldly powers while daring to question heavenly truth.


The Saints never spoke to flatter human emotions; they spoke to awaken repentance and faith.

If the Archbishop truly believed in their holiness, he would bow before their words, not interpret them according to modern sensibilities.

It is not Saint Paisios who needs to be re-explained — it is we who must rediscover the fear of God and the reverence for the Saints of His Church. 


Όταν ο Ποιμένας Αμφισβητεί έναν Άγιο



Όταν ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κύπρου δήλωσε δημόσια στην εθνική τηλεόραση ότι «ο Άγιος Παΐσιος μιλούσε λόγια παραμυθίας στους πρόσφυγες — λόγια παρηγορητικά», πολλοί πιστοί ένιωσαν βαθιά ταραχή.

Το να αποκαλεί κανείς τα λόγια ενός Αγίου απλώς «λόγια παρηγοριάς», σαν να ήταν ανθρώπινες επινοήσεις ή συναισθηματικά λόγια ενθάρρυνσης, προκαλεί σοβαρή ανησυχία.


Ένας Άγιος δεν μιλά από τη φαντασία του.

Οι Άγιοι είναι ζωντανά σκεύη του Αγίου Πνεύματος· τα λόγια τους έχουν πνευματική εξουσία, γεννημένη από θεία φώτιση και προφητική χάρη.

Το να μειώνεις τις προφητείες τους σε ανθρώπινα «λόγια παρηγοριάς» δεν είναι ταπείνωση — είναι πνευματική άγνοια.


Το ζήτημα δεν είναι αν ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος είχε πρόθεση να προσβάλει προσωπικά τον Άγιο Παΐσιο.

Το πραγματικό ερώτημα είναι: Πώς μπορεί ο προκαθήμενος μιας Τοπικής Εκκλησίας να απορρίπτει την προφητική φωνή που καθοδήγησε εκατομμύρια Ορθόδοξους πιστούς;

Μιλώντας με τόση επιπολαιότητα, κινδυνεύει να οδηγήσει άλλους στο να αμφιβάλουν για την αυθεντικότητα των Αγίων.

Και όταν οι πιστοί αρχίζουν να χάνουν την εμπιστοσύνη τους στους Αγίους, τα θεμέλια της ζώσας Ορθοδοξίας κλονίζονται.


Τέτοιες δηλώσεις δεν πηγάζουν από θεολογική ακρίβεια, αλλά από νοοτροπία διαμορφωμένη από τον ορθολογισμό και τη διπλωματία — από την επιθυμία να φαίνεται κανείς «λογικός» ενώπιον του κόσμου, αντί πιστός ενώπιον του Θεού.

Πίσω από αυτή τη στάση κρύβεται μια λεπτή πνευματική ασθένεια: ο φόβος μήπως προσβάλουμε τις κοσμικές δυνάμεις, ενώ τολμούμε να αμφισβητήσουμε την ουράνια αλήθεια.


Οι Άγιοι ποτέ δεν μιλούσαν για να κολακέψουν τα ανθρώπινα συναισθήματα· μιλούσαν για να ξυπνήσουν τη μετάνοια και την πίστη.

Αν ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος πίστευε πραγματικά στην αγιότητά τους, θα υποκλινόταν στα λόγια τους, δεν θα τα ερμήνευε σύμφωνα με τα σύγχρονα κριτήρια.

Δεν είναι ο Άγιος Παΐσιος που χρειάζεται επανερμηνεία — εμείς είμαστε που πρέπει να ξαναβρούμε τον φόβο του Θεού και τον σεβασμό προς τους Αγίους της Εκκλησίας Του.
