Saint Paisios on Greece and the Coming Events

“My child, many things await Greece — both good and bad. As the late Elder Paisios used to say, the homeland will suffer hunger… There will be famine in Greece, and they will try to blackmail her into submission…

In those days, they will impose such unbearable taxes that the people will not be able to pay them. Saint Kosmas the Aetolian tells us that they will even impose taxes on windows! But they will not have time to collect them…

And afterwards, capital will withdraw, and hunger will fall upon the world — worse than the hunger we experienced during the Occupation…

Saint Paisios tells us that the politicians and the disrespect they show in everything will be responsible for all this…

‘The people will take them with stones… They will chase them, and they will hide, because they will hand our homeland over to the Antichrist…’

The people will suffer many things, but this will not last long… A few months… Then the war with Turkey will begin, which will become a World War… And Greece will achieve great things!

All these things will happen quickly… Your generation will see them… Therefore, pray and live as you should — virtuously…”

I listened to him silently, deeply shaken. Yet my mind could not accept that all these things he was telling me could happen so quickly — so quickly that my own generation would actually live through them!

In the Book of Revelation, St. John the Theologian sees a great war involving 200 million horsemen, in which one-third of humanity is killed (Revelation 9:16). Evil affects both souls and bodies, like a powerful army bringing destruction upon humanity.

However, after this catastrophic war, the Second Coming of the Lord does not immediately take place. St. John tells us that humanity still does not repent. In other words, God grants mankind an extension of time—a further opportunity for repentance and salvation—but only a few take advantage of it.

Father Athanasios Mytilineos also explains this passage in a similar way. Through a miraculous intervention of God, the evil spirits that had led humanity toward war are restrained, allowing the earth to enter a period of peace. During this period, the Gospel can once again be preached throughout the world in its fullness and without distortion.

This is symbolically described in Revelation, chapter 10:

Revelation 10:1–2:
“And I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud, and a rainbow upon his head. His face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. He had a little book open in his hand. And he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth.”

The mighty angel places his right foot upon the sea and his left upon the earth. Symbolically, the sea can represent those who are unstable and uncertain in faith, while the earth can represent those who are more firmly established. The angel therefore exercises authority over both, bringing the power of God to the entire world.

Then Revelation says:

Revelation 10:5–6:
“And the angel which I saw standing upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and all that is in it, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it, that there should be no more delay.”

That is, there will be no further extension of time for repentance after this appointed period.

The Son is the most trustworthy witness to the Father, because, as we confess in the Creed, through Him “all things were made”—including creation itself, space and time. Furthermore, even the angels in Heaven do not know the exact day of the Second Coming, as the Lord Himself declared:

Matthew 24:36:
“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”

Then Revelation continues:

Revelation 10:11:
“And they said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.”

Therefore, St. John the Theologian, the great Apostle and Theologian of the Church, is presented as having a renewed mission: to proclaim the Word of God once again to peoples, nations, languages, and kings during this peaceful period following the great war.

This interpretation is also connected with the words of the Lord to Peter:

John 21:22:
“If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me.”

According to this interpretation, the two prophets, Elijah and Enoch, will be physically present on earth because they did not experience ordinary death, and they will confront and expose the Antichrist.

St. John, however, who is depicted in Orthodox iconography even after his falling asleep and departure from this earthly life—which the Church commemorates on September 26—is understood here as being spiritually present. Therefore, according to this interpretation, he will not be killed by the Antichrist in the same manner as the two prophets.

Because there will be relatively little time between this catastrophic war and the end of the age, St. John’s renewed preaching will be short. This is symbolized by the “little book”—a small scroll that contains his prophetic mission and is given to him by the Mighty Angel.

Thus, according to this interpretation, the Gospel will once again be preached throughout the world, and specifically in its unadulterated form, free from ecumenical distortions and other theological deviations. This mission is symbolically confirmed by the words:

“You must prophesy again.”

The words of Saint Paisios

Regarding our own time, before the great world war, Saint Paisios the Athonite said:

“Now it will be a storm, a small occupation by the Antichrist Satan. Then Christ will give him a cuff, all the nations will be shaken, and peace will come to the world for many years.

This time Christ will give His creature an opportunity to be saved. Will Christ abandon His creature? He will appear when the people reach an impasse, in order to save them from the hands of the Antichrist of that time.

They will return to Christ, and spiritual peace will come throughout the universe for many years.

Some associate this intervention of Christ with the Second Coming. I cannot say. My reasoning tells me that it will not be the Second Coming of Christ as Judge, because so many events have not yet taken place.

Christ will intervene, give a cuff to the whole system, crush all evil, and ultimately bring good out of it.

The streets will be filled with shrines. Buses will have holy images on the outside. All people will believe. They will come to you and ask you to tell them about Christ!

Thus, the Gospel will be preached throughout the universe, and then, when this period is completed, Christ will come as Judge to judge the world.

According to this interpretation, therefore, the catastrophic war is not necessarily followed immediately by the end of the world. Rather, it may be followed by a remarkable period of divine intervention, repentance, peace, and worldwide preaching of the Gospel.

Only after this period has been completed does the final coming of Christ as Judge take place.

YOGA: SIMPLE PHYSICAL EXERCISE OR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE?

ΓΙΟΓΚΑ: ΑΠΛΗ ΣΩΜΑΤΙΚΗ ΑΣΚΗΣΗ Ή ΠΝΕΥΜΑΤΙΚΗ ΠΡΑΚΤΙΚΗ;

Η γιόγκα παρουσιάζεται συχνά στη Δύση ως μια απλή μορφή γυμναστικής, χαλάρωσης και ευεξίας. Όμως οι ιστορικές της ρίζες βρίσκονται στις θρησκευτικές και φιλοσοφικές παραδόσεις της Ινδίας και όχι στη σύγχρονη δυτική αντίληψη της γυμναστικής.

Πολλές στάσεις της γιόγκα έχουν ονομασίες και συμβολισμούς που προέρχονται από ζώα, όπως η κόμπρα, ο σκύλος, η γάτα και άλλα. Αυτό από μόνο του δεν αποδεικνύει ότι κάποιος επικοινωνεί με πνεύματα ή δαίμονες όταν εκτελεί μια συγκεκριμένη στάση. Δείχνει όμως ότι η γιόγκα έχει μια ιστορία και μια συμβολική παράδοση που αξίζει να γνωρίζουμε πριν την αντιμετωπίσουμε απλώς ως «γυμναστική».

Ακόμη μεγαλύτερη προσοχή χρειάζεται όταν η σωματική άσκηση συνδυάζεται με έννοιες όπως η kundalini, τα τσάκρα, ο διαλογισμός και η «αφύπνιση» μιας εσωτερικής πνευματικής ενέργειας. Σε αυτή την περίπτωση δεν μιλάμε πλέον μόνο για κίνηση του σώματος, αλλά αγγίζουμε μια διαφορετική πνευματική και θρησκευτική κοσμοθεωρία.

Για έναν Ορθόδοξο Χριστιανό, λοιπόν, το ερώτημα δεν είναι μόνο:

«Με βοηθά αυτή η άσκηση σωματικά;»

Αλλά και:

«Ποια πνευματική παράδοση βρίσκεται πίσω από αυτήν και τι ακριβώς καλούμαι να αποδεχθώ;»

Η Αγία Γραφή μας προειδοποιεί:

«Το δε Πνεύμα ρητώς λέγει ότι εν υστέροις καιροίς αποστήσονταί τινες της πίστεως, προσέχοντες πνεύμασι πλάνοις και διδασκαλίαις δαιμονίων.»
— Α΄ Τιμοθέου 4:1

Ο Χριστιανός δεν χρειάζεται να φοβάται τη σωματική άσκηση. Μπορεί να γυμνάζεται, να δυναμώνει το σώμα του και να φροντίζει την υγεία του χωρίς να υιοθετεί θρησκευτικές πρακτικές που δεν ανήκουν στην πίστη του.

Το ζητούμενο είναι η διάκριση.

Δεν χρειάζεται να θεωρήσουμε κάθε διάταση ή κάθε στάση σώματος «δαιμονική». Χρειάζεται όμως να γνωρίζουμε την προέλευση, το νόημα και το πνευματικό πλαίσιο μιας πρακτικής πριν την ενσωματώσουμε στη ζωή μας.

Για τον Χριστιανό, το κέντρο δεν είναι μια «ενέργεια» που αφυπνίζεται μέσα μας.

Το κέντρο είναι ο Χριστός.

«Εγώ ειμί η οδός και η αλήθεια και η ζωή.»

Πριν ακολουθήσεις οποιαδήποτε πνευματική πρακτική, εξέτασέ την με προσοχή, προσευχή και διάκριση. Και ζήτησε από τον ίδιο τον Ιησού Χριστό να σου δείξει τον σωστό δρόμο.

YOGA: SIMPLE PHYSICAL EXERCISE OR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE?

Yoga is often presented in the West as nothing more than physical exercise, relaxation, and wellness. However, its historical roots are found in the religious and philosophical traditions of India, rather than in the modern Western concept of exercise.

Many yoga poses have names and symbolism derived from animals, such as the cobra, dog, cat, and others. This, by itself, does not prove that a person communicates with spirits or demons when performing a particular pose. It does, however, show that yoga has a historical and symbolic tradition that deserves to be understood before it is treated simply as another form of exercise.

Even greater caution is appropriate when physical exercises are combined with concepts such as kundalini, chakras, meditation, and the “awakening” of an inner spiritual energy. At that point, we are no longer dealing only with physical movement, but with elements of a different spiritual and religious worldview.

For an Orthodox Christian, therefore, the question is not only:

“Does this exercise benefit my body?”

but also:

“What spiritual tradition stands behind it, and what exactly am I being asked to accept?”

The Holy Scripture warns:

“The Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”
— 1 Timothy 4:1

A Christian does not need to fear physical exercise. We can strengthen our bodies and care for our health without adopting religious or spiritual practices that do not belong to our faith.

What is needed is discernment.

We do not need to declare every stretch or every physical posture “demonic.” We should, however, understand the origin, meaning, and spiritual context of a practice before making it part of our lives.

For the Christian, the center is not an “energy” that we awaken within ourselves.

The center is Christ.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
— John 14:6

Before following any spiritual practice, examine it carefully through prayer and discernment. And ask Jesus Christ Himself to show you the right path.

In simple terms: during hypnosis, increased suggestibility can make a person more receptive to suggestions from the hypnotist. Therefore, especially when the hypnotist directs questions toward a particular answer, there is a risk that false memories or beliefs may be created that the person later considers to be real.

This is particularly important when hypnosis is used to “discover” supposed past lives. The fact that someone describes a “previous life” with great confidence does not prove that such a life actually existed. It could be the result of suggestion, imagination, or reconstruction of memory.

From there, you can make your theological distinction: the Orthodox Church does not accept reincarnation as a teaching of the Christian faith, and therefore an Orthodox Christian has reason to be particularly cautious about practices that present such “memories” as spiritual truth.
