✝️ MAGIC AND WITCHCRAFT: THE CHRISTIAN RESPONSE

Why We Must Seek Christ, Not Wizards and Witches

1. WHAT SHOULD WE DO IF WE BELIEVE SOMEONE HAS PERFORMED MAGIC AGAINST US?

Throughout history, people have feared witchcraft, curses and occult practices. The Orthodox Christian response, however, must never be panic, hatred or a desperate search for someone who promises to remove a curse.

Our refuge is Jesus Christ, not magic.

Holy Scripture warns against divination and occult practices (Deuteronomy 18:10–12). Christians are called to place their trust in God rather than seeking supernatural power through forbidden spiritual practices.

We must also exercise discernment: not every illness, misfortune or personal difficulty is evidence of witchcraft. Suspicion alone cannot establish that someone has placed a curse upon us.

2. NEVER FIGHT MAGIC WITH MAGIC

One of the greatest mistakes is to visit a wizard, witch, fortune-teller or medium to undo an alleged spell. Such people may exploit fear, demand money and create further anxiety by claiming that additional rituals are necessary.

You cannot find spiritual peace by surrendering yourself to the very practices from which your faith warns you to turn away.

Do not pay anyone who threatens you with supposed curses or promises guaranteed supernatural protection in exchange for money.

The Orthodox Christian faith does not teach us to overcome evil through magical formulas, charms or occult rituals. It calls us to repentance, prayer, faith and communion with God.

3. SEEK HELP FROM THE ORTHODOX CHURCH

If you are troubled by fears concerning witchcraft, speak with a trustworthy Orthodox priest or your spiritual father.

Pray sincerely, read the Holy Scriptures, participate in the Divine Liturgy and follow the spiritual guidance of the Church. Ask for the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos and the saints, according to Orthodox tradition.

Remember that prayer is not a magical formula. It is an expression of faith, repentance, love and trust in God.

The sign of the Cross is not a charm, and the Holy Mysteries are not magical rituals. Our relationship with Christ must never be reduced to a search for techniques to control invisible forces.

4. DO NOT ALLOW FEAR TO RULE YOUR LIFE

Christians should take spiritual matters seriously without becoming prisoners of superstition.

Do not accuse someone of practising witchcraft without reliable evidence. Do not seek revenge, and never attempt to curse another person in return.

If someone threatens or harms you in real life, take appropriate practical steps to protect yourself. If anxiety becomes overwhelming, seeking professional support can also be helpful; this does not contradict Christian faith.

We must distinguish genuine spiritual vigilance from fear, suspicion and exploitation.

✝️ CONCLUSION: PLACE YOUR TRUST IN CHRIST

If you fear that someone has performed magic against you, do not panic and do not run to another wizard to undo it.

Turn to Christ. Pray with faith. Seek guidance from the Orthodox Church. Reject occult practices, resist exploitation and live with discernment, humility and love.

Our hope is not in the supposed powers of witches, wizards or mediums, but in the mercy of God.

As the Psalmist declares:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” — Psalm 27:1 (Septuagint numbering).

May our Lord Jesus Christ grant us spiritual discernment, peace of heart and steadfast faith, protecting us from deception and guiding us towards His truth.

GLORY TO THE FATHER, AND TO THE SON, AND TO THE HOLY SPIRIT, NOW AND EVER, AND UNTO THE AGES OF AGES. AMEN.
