WITH THE HELP OF THE CHURCH

With the help of the Church, some souls may pass from Hades into Paradise — though not all, and certainly not everyone. But who, and to what extent?

Let us compare Hades to an ocean. In the sea, sunlight penetrates only a certain depth. Around fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, or rarely thirty meters deep, there is still a beam of light where the rays of the sun can reach, even faintly. Beyond that begins Erebus — complete and eternal darkness.

Likewise, at this present time (before the Second Coming), there are souls in Hades who may still receive some benefit through the Divine Liturgy and the prayers of the Church. Through the mercy of God, some may gradually move from darkness toward Paradise.

SOME FROM HADES WILL GO TO PARADISE

Not everyone fully understood Christ during their earthly life, and some may still receive mercy. This is why the prayers, memorials, and mysteries of the Church are considered important.

HELL — DEMONS — PEOPLE

Hell is the place prepared for wicked demons and for people after the Second Coming, with both soul and body.

At present, demons are punished, yet they still continue their warfare against humanity. After the Second Coming, they will no longer be able to tempt or fight anyone. Eternal punishment will then fully begin.

IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

According to Orthodox belief, in Heaven today are Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos with glorified body and soul. The saints dwell in Paradise awaiting the resurrection of the body.

THERE IS NO ONE YET IN THE FINAL HELL

The final state of Hell after the Last Judgment has not yet fully begun, because the Second Coming has not yet taken place. After the Final Judgment, sinners and demons will enter eternal condemnation with both soul and body.
