THE GREAT WAGER A Spiritual Warning from Fotis Kontoglou A couple of days ago, I was reading an old book by Fotis Kontoglou, the great Greek hagiographer and writer. I came across a very beautiful passage that I wanted to share with you. It is called “The Great Wager.” It speaks about the great wager between believers and unbelievers—in other words, about the struggle that takes place between a person who believes in God and one who does not. The believer does not wage war against the unbeliever. Rather, he simply tells him, with love, that he is going down the wrong path and that he should begin to think more seriously about these things—to seriously consider spiritual matters and the truth of Christ. For Christ is the Truth. There is no other truth apart from Christ. Let me read this passage slowly and say a few words about it. A Night Beneath the Stars One beautiful spring night, just before midnight, before I went to sleep, I went into the little garden behind our house. I stood there for a while, looking up at the nearby sky, filled with stars, as though I were seeing it for the first time. Sometimes it seems that a person’s consciousness suddenly opens, and he sees something familiar as though it were completely new. That night I looked at the sky as a child would look at it for the first time. How beautiful the colors seemed to us when we were children! How beautiful the fragrances of the flowers were! Everything had an indescribable, almost virginal beauty. These things filled the space of the child’s soul. And when we grow older, perhaps we retain something of those childhood experiences. Sometimes a particular fragrance, a certain light, or some familiar sight brings those beautiful memories back to us. That night the sky seemed to me to be filled with something profound, as though a distant hymn were coming down from above. It seemed as though I could hear sacred hymns, quietly repeating: “Arise, O Lord, our God, and worship at His feet.” An elderly holy man once told me that at such hours the heavens seem to open, and the air itself becomes filled with the fragrance of musk and with the glory of the Lord. This is why Kontoglou’s description is so beautiful. Who could look at the flowers of spring, smell their fragrance, and gaze upon the stars of a clear night without feeling something great within his soul? My dear friends, look up at the sky on a clear spring night. Look at the stars. You must have felt something. I could have remained there until dawn, as though I had no body and no connection with the earth. But I thought that someone in the house might wake up and worry that I had disappeared. So I went inside, lay down, and soon fell asleep. The Man Who Appeared to Me I do not know whether I was awake or asleep when I suddenly saw before me a strange-looking man. He was pale and yellowish, almost as though he were dead. His eyes were open and he looked at me with terror. His face was like a mask. His skin appeared dark and strangely distorted. With one hand he held his chest, as though he were suffering terrible pain. The sight made me shudder. He kept looking at me without speaking, as though he were waiting for something. Everything was extraordinarily strange. Then I heard a voice. As soon as I heard it, I knew who he was. He opened his mouth and sighed, but his voice seemed to come from very far away—as though it were coming from a deep well. I could see that he was in terrible pain, and I began to suffer with him. His hands, his legs, his eyes—all of him seemed to express unbearable agony. I went toward him because I wanted to help him. But he waved his hands, telling me to stop. Then he began to cry out so terribly that I froze. He said: “I did not come here by myself. They sent me.” I trembled all over. I was completely overwhelmed, and I asked God to have mercy on me. He continued: “I want to die, but I cannot.” Then he said: “What you told me has come true.” “Do you remember a few days before my death, when you came to my house and spoke to me about religion? There were two other friends with me who were unbelievers, just like me. When you spoke, they laughed. They told me that it was a shame for someone with such a good mind to believe such nonsense. They said that these were merely old women’s stories. We had heard such things so many times. And we laughed at you. But now, my friend, I understand what you were telling us.” “I Thought I Would Live Forever” “Do you remember what you told me many times? You told me: ‘My friend, save money if you want, but you will die just like everyone else. Look how much you already have—and yet you always want more.’ And I told you that I had made a kind of agreement with life—that I would live for many more years. You asked me: ‘What do you want to do with all those years?’ And I answered: ‘You will see how old I become. I am seventy-five, and I will live beyond one hundred.’” This, too, was a deception. A person can imagine that he has many years ahead of him, yet the human heart can stop at any moment. Nothing guarantees us another day—or even another minute. The human heart depends upon extraordinarily delicate electrical and biochemical processes. A tiny electrical impulse causes the heart muscle to contract, again and again, keeping the body alive. And yet a person’s entire earthly life can end in a single moment. I thought I had made a contract with life. I said: “I will live beyond one hundred. I have taken care of my children. My son makes good money. My daughter has married a wealthy man. My wife and I have everything we need.” And I thought I was secure. I laughed when Christians spoke about death and the end of life. The Great Irony This is the irony that many secular people and unbelievers use against Christians. When Christians speak about the end of our lives, when we make the sign of the Cross and say that we want our final years—and especially our final moment—to find us as Christians, people sometimes laugh at us. But what does it actually mean? It means that we want to be prepared. We want to leave this world as Christians. That is not something ridiculous. It is something of enormous importance. When we hear in church about death and judgment, we are shaken. We make the sign of the Cross. We understand that our life will end. And we want that end to find us spiritually prepared. Yet some people laugh at this and consider it foolish. But now let us see what happened. “Why Did Your Merciful God Allow Poor People to Exist?” The unbeliever asks: “Why did your merciful God create poor people? Why should I give money to the poor? Why did He bring them into the world?” This is another misunderstanding. We are told to give alms to the poor, not merely because the poor need material help, but because helping them is also for the benefit of our own souls. In reality, the poor often benefit us spiritually far more than we benefit them materially. We may give them a little money, some food, or something they need. But through them, God gives us the opportunity to practice mercy, charity and love. The ideal is not to keep every surplus thing in our own pockets. The Danger of Becoming Dependent And then there is another danger that we should think about. Imagine a society in which everything depends upon cards and electronic systems. You have money, but it exists only through a card. You need the card for everything. Without it, you may find yourself unable to buy what you need. Even today, if you do not have a telephone card, you may have difficulty making a telephone call. You must find another telephone, a public phone, or someone willing to help you. I am not saying that every card is evil or that we should literally reject every modern service. These things can be useful. It is a matter of personal judgment and conscience. We should not condemn someone simply because he uses such services. We do not have that right. But we should remain spiritually alert. We should avoid becoming completely dependent upon systems that could eventually control every aspect of human life. This is an act of vigilance and, where necessary, an act of spiritual resistance. God sees the intention of the heart. Saint Paisios warned that after such systems of identification and cards, even more restrictive forms of identification and control could eventually appear. Whether one agrees with every detail of such warnings or not, the spiritual lesson remains: Do not surrender your freedom of conscience. Do not allow modern conveniences to become chains. “Why Should I Give Anything to the Poor?” The unbeliever continues: “Why should I give anything to poor people who are lazy? Why did God create them? Why should I support them?” But God does not abandon the poor. And He also uses the existence of the poor to test the hearts of those who have more. The poor give us an opportunity to practice mercy. They may receive something from us materially, but we can receive something much greater spiritually. “I Will Live to Be 110” The man continued: “I was a doctor. I had studied. I knew how to speak. I knew how to make fun of religion. I believed only in things that could be seen and measured. I told myself that I would live to be 110 years old. I was certain of it.” But suddenly everything changed. He seemed to be suffering terribly, as though he were being burned. Something came from his mouth. He cried: “Oh! Oh!” Then he became silent for a moment. Finally he said: “What I told you a few days ago has happened. I died. I died—and I lost the wager. What terror! What horror! I cried out: ‘Mercy! Mercy!’ But no one heard me. What torment this is! Everything you told me has come true. You won the wager.” “You Were Right” He continued: “When I was in the world you live in, I thought I was the intelligent one. I was a doctor. I had learned how to speak and how to ridicule religion. I believed only in tangible things. But now I see that what I called fairy tales and superstition is real. Now I understand. Now I see what I refused to believe. But it is too late.” His voice slowly faded away. I fell asleep for a while. Then, suddenly, I felt a cold hand touching me. I opened my eyes and saw him again. This time he looked even more terrible. He appeared smaller, almost like a distorted old Byzantine figure. He opened his mouth and told me: “Soon it will be dawn, and they will come to take me away. Those who sent me will come.” I asked him: “Who sent you?” He answered with confused words that I could hardly understand. Then he told me: “There are many others here like me. They are the ones who mocked you because of your faith. Now they understand that human reasoning does not extend beyond the grave.” The Malice of the Devil He also spoke about people who had received kindness from Christians and yet repaid that kindness with hatred. This is one of the great evils of the devil. Sometimes when we show kindness to someone, that person does not rejoice. Instead, he feels humiliated. He thinks: “They are better than me. They have something I do not have. I am in a worse condition than they are.” And instead of responding to kindness with gratitude, he responds with bitterness. This is a terrible spiritual condition. The man said: “I am being severely tormented because I rejected the love of God. As one of the saints said, the love of God becomes a scourge for those who refuse to accept it.” The Great Wager Then came the most important words: “You who have Christ in your heart, you for whom the word of Christ is the Truth, you have won the great wager. You have won the great wager between believers and unbelievers. I, the miserable one, lost. I perished. I tremble and sigh, and I cannot find peace. Unfortunately, I am in Hell. There is no repentance there anymore. Woe to those who leave this world as we did. While we were on earth, we allowed our passions to intoxicate us. We joined ourselves to those who did not believe in God or in the life to come. And the world applauded us. It applauded us when we mocked those who believed. The world applauds evil. You can see it in the theatres. The more vulgar and obscene a performance becomes, the more applause it receives. And when performers see that obscenity receives applause, they give the people even more of it. It becomes a vicious circle. If the world stopped rewarding obscenity, obscenity would diminish. But instead, the world applauds it.” When Evil Is Crowned and Goodness Is Mocked He continued: “Look at what happens. Evil is crowned, while goodness is condemned. The world applauds those who live according to their passions and mocks those who believe in God and eternal life. People called us clever. They called you fools. And we accepted that applause. We thought we had won. But now I understand. Our wickedness was not a victory. It was our destruction.” He described how the world can insult Christians with every kind of accusation: “Hypocrites! Religious fanatics! Blasphemers! Fascists! Obscurantists!” And many other names. Yet Christians are called to receive such insults with patience rather than hatred. If those who mock Christianity could see, even for a moment, the reality of the spiritual world from which this man was speaking, they would be terrified. I wish they could be warned. I wish they could change their ways. But I have no permission to return and warn them. It is like the rich man in the Gospel who begged Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers. He was not sent. A Final Warning We will all be judged according to our deeds. Those who live in sin must take seriously the consequences of sin. Those who live in repentance, faith and love place their hope in the mercy of God. These are spiritual flowers from the writings of Fotis Kontoglou, reflections on the immortal values of Orthodox Christian life. This particular passage is deeply moving because it resembles accounts found in the writings of various saints—accounts of visions, of souls experiencing the consequences of their earthly lives, and of the terrible realization that can come after death. My dear friends, those who do not believe may one day be confronted with a reality they did not expect. And then it will be too late to correct what should have been corrected during this earthly life. That is why this message deserves to be taken seriously. Not only by those who believe, but especially by those who mock religion and regard everything spiritual as a joke. It is time to think seriously—very seriously—about God, about Christ, about death, about the soul, and about the life to come. The great wager is not about money. It is about eternity. And every human being is making that wager through the way he chooses to live.

WAR BETWEEN GREECE AND TURKEY — AND THE OUTCOME Prophecies Attributed to Elder Paisios and Saint Cosmas of Aetolia There are numerous prophecies circulating among Orthodox Christians concerning a future conflict involving Greece, Turkey, Russia, Constantinople, and the wider region. Among the most widely repeated are sayings attributed to Saint Paisios the Athonite and Saint Cosmas of Aetolia. These accounts speak of a future period of war in which Turkey would suffer a major defeat, Constantinople would ultimately come under Greek control, and dramatic changes would take place throughout the region. These statements should be understood as traditional or attributed prophetic accounts, rather than as established predictions of future political events. THE TURKS WILL LEAVE — BUT RETURN AGAIN One saying attributed to Saint Cosmas of Aetolia is commonly rendered: “The Turks will leave, but they will return again and come as far as Examilia.” The expression “Examilia” is traditionally understood as referring to approximately six miles into the Aegean. The prophecy is therefore interpreted by some as describing a future Turkish advance into Greek territory or waters, followed by another withdrawal. A FUTURE WAR According to the accounts attributed to Elder Paisios, a future war involving Turkey and Russia would bring enormous consequences for the region. Some versions claim that Turkey would be defeated and would cease to exist in its present form as a state. Other versions speak of the division of the Turkish population into three parts: one part being killed, another part being baptized into Orthodoxy, and another part leaving the region. These details vary considerably between different retellings, and their exact historical source should therefore be treated with caution. CONSTANTINOPLE The most famous element of these traditions concerns Constantinople. According to the commonly circulated prophecy, Russia would become involved in a major war with Turkey, while another power would also participate. Disagreements would eventually arise over Constantinople, and the city would ultimately be given to the Greeks. For Orthodox Christians, Constantinople holds a unique spiritual and historical significance as the ancient center of the Byzantine Christian world. The prophecy is therefore understood by believers not simply as a geopolitical prediction, but within a much broader religious and eschatological tradition. CYPRUS Another claim frequently circulated alongside these prophecies concerns Cyprus: “Cyprus will be free from Turkish forces after the war.” This is particularly significant to Greek Cypriots because the northern part of Cyprus has remained under Turkish military control since the events of 1974. Whether one accepts or rejects the prophetic interpretation, the political question of Cyprus remains an unresolved international issue. ARMENIANS AND KURDS Some versions of these prophetic narratives also claim that the Armenians and Kurds will eventually obtain their own states or territories, and that Turkey will be forced to confront the consequences of past atrocities. These statements are often connected by their proponents to the Armenian Genocide and to the long-standing Kurdish question. Such historical and political claims should be distinguished from the prophetic traditions themselves. “WAKE UP” Those who believe these prophecies are warning of future events often interpret them as a call for Christians to remain spiritually awake rather than complacent. The central message, in this interpretation, is not simply military or political. It is a warning to prepare spiritually for times of upheaval, remembering the words of Christ: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” — Matthew 24:42 Whether these prophecies will ever correspond to future political events cannot be established in advance. But the sayings attributed to the Elders continue to circulate because they speak to the fears, hopes, and historical memory of Orthodox Christians throughout Greece, Cyprus, Russia, and the wider Orthodox world. THE FUTURE IS IN GOD’S HANDS Geopolitical tensions in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean are real, and history has shown that relations between Greece and Turkey can become extremely serious. But Christians are not called to live in fear. The proper response to warnings about the future is vigilance, prayer, repentance, and faith in God. “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” — Matthew 24:44 KARMA WILL PAY OFF? History is full of suffering, injustice, wars, and the rise and fall of empires. But for the Christian, the final judgment belongs to God. “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” — Romans 12:19 Whatever the future holds for Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Russia, Armenia, or the peoples of the region, Christians should remember that nations rise and fall — but God’s Kingdom remains. Μερικές ήταν ακρωτηριασμένες με τεντωμένους λαιμούς, και άλλες με πρησμένα μάτια. You are ours now!...” I began to read my sins and all my deeds, which were written in large letters, amid great fear. I saw fire coming out of their mouths as they struck me on the head, Sparks of burning fire fell on me and stuck to me, burning me. Around me I heard a terrible wail, a great thunder, and the cries of many people. When the fire grew stronger, I saw everything around me. The souls had a dreadful appearance. Some were maimed with stretched necks, and others with swollen eyes. They said to me: “You are a comrade of ours, (meaning, apparently, the communist salute), and you are obliged to live with us now...” Just as you, so we, when we lived on earth, did not recognize Christ, we blasphemed and cursed, we did every kind of evil, and especially fornication, pride, and we never repented. Many sinned, but afterwards repented and went to Church, prayed to God, showed mercy to the poor, and helped every person in need. All of them are now up there, far from us... (meaning, of course, the Paradise, which they did not want to mention even by name...) I was afraid when I heard these words, and especially that I would live in these dreadful places for all eternity... After these, within a light that drove away the darkness, the Mother of God appeared again. The demons fled, while the tormented souls began to plead with loud cries for mercy: “Heavenly Queen, do not abandon us, Mother of God, we beg you, we are burning and there is not a drop of water to quench our thirst...” She wept compassionately with them, but, not having the power of redemption, she said to them: “While you lived on earth, you did not recognize Me, indeed you even blasphemed Me. You did not repent for your sins against My Son and your God, and that is why I cannot help you now. But neither can Christ, for He cannot go against the will of His Father!” I help only those for whom their relatives pray, and for whom the holy Church prays. After these words, we began to rise, while from below the voices of the damned grew stronger: “Mother of God, do not leave us...” 3. РУССКИЙ ТЕПЕРЬ ТЫ НАШ... Los demonios vinieron corriendo con listas, mostrando mis pecados y gritando: “Nos serviste cuando estabas en la tierra. ¡Ahora eres nuestro!...” Comencé a leer mis pecados y todas mis acciones, que estaban escritas con letras grandes, con gran temor. Patristic Wisdom: Do Not Trust Every Vision The ancient Christian Fathers repeatedly warned believers not to accept every extraordinary vision, dream, voice, or spiritual experience simply because it appears impressive or even benevolent. St. Peter of Damascus emphasizes the danger of spiritual deception and reminds us that the enemy can present thoughts that appear righteous to those who lack experience and discernment. This is a profoundly important principle when considering modern accounts of mysterious beings, supernatural encounters, visions, or alleged extraterrestrial communications. The appearance of something does not, by itself, prove its origin. A person may see a figure that appears beautiful, peaceful, intelligent, or even “angelic.” That still does not establish that the being is from God. Nor does a message become true simply because it produces powerful emotions or appears to contain wisdom. The Fathers instead point toward humility, patience, prayer, and spiritual discernment. In the tradition of the Church, there is even a warning against actively seeking extraordinary visions. The desire to experience supernatural phenomena can itself become a spiritual danger, because a person may become fascinated by the experience rather than seeking God. This gives us an important question to ask about every extraordinary claim: Where does this experience lead? Does it lead a person toward Christ, humility, repentance, prayer, truth, and love? Or does it lead toward fascination with hidden knowledge, pride, fear, confusion, self-importance, or teachings that contradict the Christian faith? The Fathers’ answer is essentially: do not be impressed merely because something appears supernatural. Test it. Remain humble. Do not rush to accept what you cannot understand. And perhaps this is especially relevant in an age saturated with images. We live surrounded by movies, books, science fiction, television, the internet, artificial imagery, and thousands of representations of angels, demons, aliens, spacecraft, and other worlds. These images can become deeply embedded in our imagination. Therefore, when someone experiences something unexplained, we should distinguish carefully between the experience itself and the interpretation placed upon it. What was actually experienced? What did the person subsequently conclude that it was? And how much of that interpretation may have been shaped by ideas already present in the person’s mind? For the Christian, there is an even more fundamental question: Does the message confess the truth of Christ, or does it draw the person away from Him? Extraordinary experiences require extraordinary discernment. As the Patristic tradition repeatedly teaches, humility is safer than curiosity, patience is safer than haste, and the simple prayer “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me” is safer than becoming fascinated with unknown spiritual phenomena. Not everything mysterious is divine. Not everything beautiful is holy. And not everything that appears to bring “light” should immediately be accepted as coming from God.

What About Our Imagination? What about our imagination? I have noticed that we often treat certain images and visions as though they were photographs — as if what a person sees must necessarily correspond exactly to an objective reality. But is that really the case? If we look at how human beings’ ability to imagine, depict, and visually represent things has changed throughout history, we should ask an important question: How do we know that what we see today is exactly what people in the past saw? And how do we know that we are not sometimes interpreting an image through things that have already been deeply imprinted on our minds — through the media, movies, books, paintings, religious imagery, science-fiction stories, and popular culture? A person may see something mysterious and genuinely believe that the experience was real. But the interpretation of that experience may still be influenced by everything that person has previously seen and learned. This is especially important when discussing alleged encounters with extraterrestrial beings. One striking observation is that these supposed beings never confirm the divinity of Christ, nor do they claim to come in His name. Instead, the stories attributed to them often change according to the knowledge and expectations of the people encountering them. Consider the claims made about where these beings supposedly come from. In earlier periods, when human knowledge of the planets and the universe was far more limited, alleged entities could supposedly claim to come from planets within our own solar system. But as astronomy advanced and humanity learned more about those worlds, many of those explanations became impossible or implausible. The stories then evolved: the beings were said to come from distant solar systems, other galaxies, or places such as Andromeda. This raises a serious question: Are we actually receiving information from an external intelligence — or are we sometimes interpreting unexplained experiences through whatever ideas are already available in our minds? From an Orthodox Christian perspective, there is another question that should not be ignored: What is the spiritual source of the experience, and where does it ultimately lead the person? Not every extraordinary vision should automatically be accepted as divine revelation. Christianity has always warned about spiritual deception and about trusting every supernatural-looking experience without discernment. The appearance of something mysterious is not, by itself, proof of its origin. We should therefore remain cautious, examine the evidence, and — above all — remember that not everything that appears supernatural is necessarily from God.

First of all, I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to be here in Cyprus, the land of holy people. As far as magic is concerned, the situation among the people there is catastrophic. There is no love between people. One time, I asked someone who was carrying a small wooden figure: “Why do you have this with you?” He answered me: “With this, I protect myself and my family from the magic of other people.” He placed all his faith in this small wooden figure. When we baptize people there, we explain to them that they must remove these magical objects from themselves. One person was not convinced to take it off. No matter how much we tried to put him in the water to baptize him, he was unable to enter. An invisible demonic force was pushing him away. Eventually, he was baptized, but he had not truly accepted the faith. When he was in church to receive Holy Communion, he fell down and had convulsions, like an epileptic seizure. We explained to him the reasons why this happened, but he did not want to listen, and he died without confessing the truth. One day, I was with a priest there, and we saw a naked girl. The priest said to me: “This girl is a magician. She came from another village far away.” I asked: “How did she come here from such a distance?” The priest answered: “You do not know. She came flying through the air.” According to what was believed there, in order to succeed in magic, she had taken a small child, torn out the heart, and drunk the blood. In this way, they believed that demons held magicians in the air and allowed them to fly. Another time, Father James was in Africa and asked a magician: “How do you harm people?” The magician said: “Look, I touch them and I cause them problems.” Father James replied: “Do the same to me.” The magician answered: “I cannot touch you. You, the Orthodox priest, are full of fire.” Another time, a man believed to be possessed by a demon went to a Catholic priest to ask him to cast the demon out of him. According to the story, the demon inside the man said to the Catholic priest: “You are a Capuchin. Do you think I can hear you?” The speaker then says that, according to his belief, Catholics do not have divine grace. Now I will tell you another story. Three former magicians went and were baptized without confessing their sins first. According to the story, the demons said to them: “We do not care what you have done, but do not mention it to Father Meletios.” Before being baptized, these three men had killed a woman and her two children. Someone witnessed this, found others, and they went to kill this former magician. The former magician then made a deal with the demons, saying: “If someone kills me, I want you to reveal to my family who my killers are.” They took him to bury him. According to the story, an invisible force did not allow the coffin to be buried. The coffin pulled the men who were carrying it in another direction, leading them to the house of the people who had killed the former magician, in order to reveal who the murderers were. At the funeral, everyone was frightened. They did not know what to do. The dead man appeared to begin breathing inside the coffin, and his son started speaking to him, believing that his father was alive, although he was not. After the murderers were revealed and everyone became afraid, his son came to me asking for help. I brought another priest with me to bury him. Everyone who was there was very frightened. After they saw what we did, how we prayed according to the Orthodox tradition, and how we prayed for the repose of the man’s soul and buried him, they believed that we had greater spiritual power than

Abdul Hamid gave the order for the tomb of Mehmed the Conqueror, which was located next to the mosque, to be opened in order to check for any damage and make repairs. The tomb was opened, and at a depth of three meters, an iron trapdoor was found. From there, a stone staircase led down into the underground chamber of a Byzantine church. There, to their astonishment, the workers found a marble tomb containing the embalmed body of Mehmed—identical to the portrait painted by the Italian artist a few months before his death. This fact—that Mehmed was buried within the ruins of a Byzantine church—has been considered by many as strong evidence that he wished to be buried as a Christian and Byzantine emperor, among the other Byzantine rulers. It is known that Mehmed often claimed to be the successor of the Byzantine emperors. Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who, for political reasons at the time, had abandoned a certain Islamic sect he had followed and had adopted Sunni Islam, was seized with panic and ordered the tomb to be immediately sealed. These events took place before 1908, and since then, the tomb has never been opened again. For this reason, it is difficult today to verify the testimony. However, on December 19, 1996, a Turkish weekly publication associated with the well-known newspaper Sabah was released with the striking headline: “The Conqueror was a Christian.” The subtitle read: “Historians have not been able to solve this mystery to this day.” Many centuries after the death of the great Fatih—Mehmed the Conqueror, as he is historically known—it is also known that he had a Christian mother, most likely of Greek origin. The fact that in modern Turkey—where Islamic identity is strongly re-emerging—such reports are published is seen by some as evidence of doubt about Mehmed’s true religious identity, even within the official Turkish establishment. This becomes even more significant when we consider that Fatih Mehmed is one of the greatest taboos of Turkish history, nationalism, and identity. A leader like him was expected to embody not only national pride but also religious identity. And yet, inside his tomb, it is claimed, lies one of the greatest secrets of the Ottoman Empire. There were testimonies stating that next to the tomb there was a cross and an icon of the Virgin Mary. According to these claims, Mehmed the Conqueror may have embraced Christianity at the end of his life—something carefully concealed by official Turkish historiography. From his early childhood, he had contact with Christianity through his Christian mother. It is one of the great historical mysteries how a relatively small number of Seljuk Turks and Ottomans who arrived in Asia Minor between the 9th and 10th centuries managed, within a few centuries, to change the entire ethnic and religious character of a region inhabited by millions—many say up to 20 million—Greek-speaking Orthodox Christians. There are many explanations. Some say it was forced Islamization through violence, while others say it occurred for practical and economic reasons. However, because this process of religious conversion was often incomplete and superficial, a unique characteristic remained within Turkish Islam—one that some consider a heterodox element. Today, this is being increasingly discussed by Turkish journalists and researchers under the term “the religious problem of modern Turkey.” On November 10, 2002, a Turkish newspaper reported that the feast of Saint Nektarios was celebrated inside a Muslim mosque—formerly a Christian church—in Eastern Thrace. Many Turkish Muslims stayed after their prayers to observe the Christian service with great reverence. Similarly, there are reports of Turkish Muslims attending Christian ceremonies, lighting candles, kissing priests’ hands, and seeking blessings from the Virgin Mary. In some cases, even Muslims from other countries, such as Iran and Iraq, visit Orthodox churches in Istanbul, seeking hope, healing, and help for their personal struggles. Some Turkish women have even been reported diving into the water during the Epiphany ceremony to catch the cross—an act deeply rooted in Orthodox Christian tradition. Other reports mention Muslims visiting churches regularly, praying, lighting candles, and asking for miracles. Turkish newspapers have even described certain churches as “places of hope” for Muslims. In recent years, there has also been an increase in conversions to Christianity in Turkey, often among people who later discover they have Christian ancestry. Investigations revealed that many of these individuals had ancestors who were Islamized, especially after the Asia Minor catastrophe, and later rediscovered their Christian roots. There are also remarkable accounts of healing sites, such as sacred springs associated with early Christianity, where both Turks and foreigners visit for healing. In some places, visitors light candles, burn incense, and perform acts that are officially forbidden in Islam. Despite this, such practices continue and are even broadcast on Turkish television. One striking example is the pilgrimage to Saint George on the island of Büyükada, where tens of thousands of Muslim Turks visit the church, light candles, make vows, and seek blessings. Some even walk barefoot up the hill to the church, tying threads along the path as part of a ritual for their wishes. Priests are seen blessing Muslim visitors, sometimes even making the sign of the cross on their foreheads. Finally, there was a mysterious event reported in 1998 on the island of Antigoni, where a strange, sorrowful sound—like a sigh—was heard every night around a church. Residents were alarmed and unable to explain it. Some interpreted it as a supernatural sign, even suggesting it was a message from the Virgin Mary—a lament for the state of the world and the abandonment of faith. The church, once full of Orthodox believers, now stands nearly empty. And this sorrowful “voice” was seen by some as a symbol of that loss.

🇬🇧 ENGLISH TEXT THE EMBRYOS ARE ALIVE? IT’S PROOFED. Some people went to FATHER PAISIOS and told him that a nun in Cyprus said to light candles for the unborn babies that their mothers kill. Father Paisios said: “She is crazy! There are no unborn babies in heaven, THE EMBRYOS ARE LOST!” During the night he saw a dream… While he was walking he heard voices of small babies, a lot of voices, and the place was shaken. Above them there was sand with candles, and under the candles you could hear babies’ voices. And they were shouting: “SAVE US, GOD, MY GOD SAVE US!” Father Paisios then asked another monk who was close to him: “Who are these that are shouting-screaming?” He was told: “These are the unborn innocent babies that mothers and doctors, without their will, have lost. Because they are unbaptized, they go to a place where the devils are not allowed to tempt them, because they are innocent. But it is dark, it is not paradise, it is darkness.” When Father Paisios woke up he told the people: “There ARE embryos and there IS a soul. Yes, you must light candles for the EMBRYOS. Because there is a soul.” ⸻ LET’S UNDERSTAND: A man approaches a woman and fertilization is done. The sperm of the man is alive — if it was dead, it would not fertilize. So it is alive. From the moment of fertilization the baby receives a soul. Fertilization = living soul + living body. The soul is the breath of God. It is a living being. So there must be respect for the EMBRYOS. ⸻ 🇬🇷 ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ ΤΑ ΕΜΒΡΥΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΖΩΝΤΑΝΑ; ΕΧΕΙ ΑΠΟΔΕΙΧΘΕΙ. Πάνω τους υπήρχε άμμος με κεριά και κάτω από τα κεριά ακούγονταν οι φωνές των μωρών. Και φώναζαν: «ΣΩΣΕ ΜΑΣ ΘΕΕ, ΘΕΕ ΜΟΥ ΣΩΣΕ ΜΑΣ!» Ο Άγιος Παΐσιος ρώτησε έναν άλλο μοναχό που ήταν κοντά του: «Ποιοι είναι αυτοί που φωνάζουν;» Του απάντησαν: «Είναι τα αγέννητα αθώα παιδιά που οι μητέρες και οι γιατροί, χωρίς να το θέλουν, τα χάνουν. Γιατί υπάρχει ψυχή.» ⸻ Ας καταλάβουμε: Ένας άντρας πλησιάζει μια γυναίκα και γίνεται η γονιμοποίηση. Το σπέρμα είναι ζωντανό — αν ήταν νεκρό δεν θα γινόταν γονιμοποίηση. Άρα είναι ζωντανό. Από τη στιγμή της γονιμοποίησης το μωρό λαμβάνει ψυχή. Γονιμοποίηση = ζωντανή ψυχή + ζωντανό σώμα. Η ψυχή είναι η πνοή του Θεού. Είναι ζωντανό ον. Άρα πρέπει να υπάρχει σεβασμός στα ΕΜΒΡΥΑ.

Δεν λέω ότι ξέρεις ήδη την απάντηση. Αλλά αν δεν υπάρχει Θεός, τότε μένουν κάποια ερωτήματα που πρέπει να σταθούν μόνα τους. Πώς προέκυψε ένα σύμπαν με νόμους που δεν αλλάζουν; Γιατί η ύλη υπακούει σε μαθηματική τάξη; Πώς από απλή ύλη εμφανίζεται συνείδηση — η εμπειρία του “εγώ”; Και γιατί ο άνθρωπος δεν ψάχνει μόνο το “πώς”, αλλά και το “γιατί”; Δεν λέω ότι η απάντηση είναι εύκολη. Λέω όμως ότι η ερώτηση δεν εξαφανίζεται. Και ίσως τελικά, το ζήτημα δεν είναι ποιος “πιστεύει”. Αλλά ποιος αντέχει να δει ότι δεν έχουν εξηγηθεί όλα. — I’m not saying you already have the answer. But if there is no God, then some questions still remain. How did a universe governed by consistent laws come into existence? Why does matter follow mathematical order? How does mere matter give rise to consciousness — the experience of “I”? And why does human thought search not only for “how”, but for “why”? I’m not claiming the answer is easy. I’m saying the question doesn’t go away. And maybe the issue is not who “believes”. But who is willing to admit that not everything is explained.

When you die, my child, many will fight against the priests. And the high priests will not allow any priest to speak on his own—only what they tell him. The high priests will begin writing the sermons, and the priests will simply have to read them. In that time, they will even remove the cross from the sanctuaries. When you see these things, know that the great evil has begun. Priests will no longer be free to speak easily. That is why I will give my spirit to simple children, to boys and girls. After your death, many will want to learn what you said, and the evil one will begin to distort your words in order to bring confusion into people’s minds. Sadly, because our Church is poor, it is controlled by foreign money, and behind it stands the Vatican. That is why, it is said, all the church leaders have been given a noose. God says they have been given a noose and are being pulled like dogs. Soon there will be a new and great evil in the Church, unlike anything before, and the whole Church will be shaken as if by a massive earthquake. It will not be a normal earthquake, but something far greater. At that time, all people, all Christians, will not know where to go or what to do. But remember what Christ says: in My name you were baptized as Christians; in My name you became priests. I will be your true Father of the Church. And remember that the Church is not the buildings that are constructed but your hearts. Time will pass, and people will come to understand who truly governs the world. Then they will see how harsh and evil the Antichrist is. If they do not make the sign of the cross, how will I bless them and remove the poisons placed in their bodies? When they do not have holy water, they will take ordinary water. They will not say “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” yet I will bless that water, and when they drink it, their bodies will be blessed, and their minds will be cleansed.

Every Thursday and Friday—except, as I told you, for the 40 days after Epiphany—it cannot be performed on September 14th, which is the Feast of the Holy Cross. People would very often ask you to destroy others, especially in matters of inheritance involving large fortunes. Unfortunately, as I remember, during the periods of Holy Thursday and Holy Friday—when major magical rituals take place—even a person could be killed through magic. Of course, there are certain conditions that people should know: if God does not allow it, nothing can happen. For someone to be affected—even to the point of death—they must already be spiritually indifferent, hardened, and have rejected Christ from their heart. That is, they have completely turned away and placed themselves in the hands of the devil. So, if God allows it, and at some point it becomes evident—even to us—that death will occur, then there is a ritual that can be performed, and within 24 hours the person may die. —Have you performed such a ritual in an apartment in Athens? —Yes, of course. —Did your teacher only remove spells, or also cast them? —Mostly he cast them. And to tell the truth, he never removed them, because he couldn’t. He even told me that—“we can never undo them,” because that belongs to a higher authority, namely the Church. There were also periods he mentioned to me personally, when I myself was not well—I felt like I was going insane. This was during the period of Epiphany, from the day of Epiphany and for 40 days afterward, because of the great religious event of Christ’s baptism and the sanctification of the waters. All this, as Maros used to say, is why we protected ourselves and endured it by taking pills—sedatives and painkillers—because we had terrible pain, headaches, and a state of mental disturbance during that period. —How is this explained? —As I said, it can be explained better by the Church. It is the great gift that God gives to people—especially Orthodox Christians—through the sanctification that takes place. At that time, all spells are broken as a sign of God’s gift because of the baptism of His Son. That is, even if you had cast spells on someone, everything would be undone. All the written charms, all the bindings—everything would turn to nothing, like ashes and smoke. And we suffered because of this. What stood out is that during that time, both I personally and Maros—who also confessed this—recognized that Christ is indeed more powerful, and so is the Church. But we still couldn’t leave. —What did you tell your clients? —We told them excuses, because they came with serious complaints. They saw everything turning upside down. Even marriages that had been “achieved” through magic were breaking apart. Forgive me, but marriages were dissolving, along with other matters—inheritance cases and everything else. —Is it possible for someone who works as a medium to have a gift from God and help others? —According to the Orthodox Church, absolutely not, because they cooperate with demons. There are even cases where, at the moment magic or divination is being performed, if Christians are praying or a liturgy is taking place, all their rituals are immobilized. —Does the victim of magic have symptoms, and what are they? —First of all, anyone involved in such practices is cut off from the body of the Church. Secondly, they are exposed to evil spirits that operate within the realm of magic. There are many cases where even the practitioners themselves suffer greatly from the spirits they invoke. In other cases, people fall ill or suffer mental disturbance. —Finally, Father Daniel, how can someone be immune to magic throughout their life? —The way is to live a sacramental life. That is, to be a conscious member of the Church: to have a spiritual father, to confess, to receive Holy Communion, to study Scripture and the writings of the Church Fathers, and so on.

This is a well-known text from the books published about Elder Paisios, Saint Paisios the Athonite. From “Spiritual Awakening” (Discourses II), published by the Holy Hesychasterion of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti, Thessaloniki, around page 188. Listen: a nun once asked Elder Paisios, while he was still alive, “Elder, in these difficult times, will Christ intervene?” It’s the same question people ask today. The same question was asked even before 1994, when he reposed—30 years ago. Even then, people felt the times were difficult. Imagine what he would say about our times today. So the nun asks again: “Elder, in these difficult times, will Christ intervene?” And listen to the vision Paisios had. He was a prophet—not only did he have a prophetic gift (which others also had), but he also had the gift of interpreting prophecy. Here he answers someone who is suffering unjustly but has a good disposition. Because such a person deserves divine help, many times the saints, the Virgin Mary, or Christ Himself appear to save them. How much more now, when the poor world will be in such a difficult state? “What is coming,” he says, “will be like a storm.” Listen carefully—he says the following: “There will be a short ‘occupation’ by the Antichrist, by Satan. Then a ‘slap’ from Christ.” All nations will be shaken, and peace will come to the world for many years. This time, Christ will give an opportunity for His creation to be saved. Will Christ abandon His creation? No. He will appear at humanity’s dead end in order to save people from the hands of the Antichrist. People will return to Christ, and a spiritual peace will come over the whole world for many years. Do you hear what awaits us? These things are said for our own generation. Again—he said this 30 years ago. A spiritual peace will come over the whole world for many years. But first, he says, there will be a shaking of all nations. All nations will be shaken. These are no longer local problems. Notice—they are not national issues; they are global. Some people, he says—pay close attention—connect this intervention of Christ with the Second Coming. “I cannot say that,” he says. See how humble and discerning the saint was. “My thought tells me that this will not be the Second Coming of Christ as Judge, but rather an intervention of Christ.” Because there are still many events that have not yet taken place—he is referring to the events of the Apocalypse. Therefore, we cannot yet speak about the Antichrist in that final sense.

*The vision of Saint Niphon regarding the Second Coming has something to tell all of us, to every class of people, from bishops down to the last layperson. * One night, after the Saint finished his customary nightly prayer, he lay down to sleep on the stones. As always, it was midnight, and he was still keeping vigil, gazing at the moon and the stars in the sky. Alone as he was, he reflected on his sins. What sins? And yet he wept bitterly because he brought to mind the fearful hour of judgment. Suddenly, he sees the firmament of heaven being drawn back like a sheet, and the Lord Jesus Christ appears in enormous proportions. He stood in the air, surrounded by all the heavenly hosts—angels, archangels, and fearsome and exalted ranks arranged in perfect order. The Lord signaled to the commander of one rank, and he approached—radiant, awe-inspiring, yet reverent. “Michael, Michael, prince of the Covenant, take with your rank the fiery throne of My glory and go to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There you shall set it as the first sign of My presence. For the hour is near when each one will receive according to his works. And the moment has quickly come when I will judge those who worshiped idols, the devil, and denied Me, their Creator. All of them will be shattered like vessels, as will My enemies—the heretics who dared to separate Me from My Father, who dared to reduce the Comforter Spirit to a creature. What hell awaits them? Now I will appear to the Jews who crucified Me and did not believe in My divinity. All authority, honor, and power have been given to Me. I am the righteous Judge. When I was on the Cross, they said: ‘He saved others; let Him save Himself.’ Now vengeance is Mine; I will repay. I will judge, I will expose, and I will punish the wicked and perverse generation severely, because it did not repent. I gave them opportunities to repent, but they despised them. Therefore, now I will take vengeance. I will do the same to the Sodomites, to those who commit perversions and who polluted the earth and the air with their stench. I burned them then in Sodom and Gomorrah, and again I will burn them because they defiled the pleasure of the Holy Spirit and loved the pleasure of the devil. I will also punish the adulterers, the foolish and darkened ones who resemble irrational beasts. They were not content with their lawful marriage but foolishly turned to adultery, and Satan cast them bound into the abyss of fire. They did not hear that ‘it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.’ I called them to repentance, yet they did not repent. I will also condemn the thieves who committed many evils, even murders, and all those who committed a multitude of sins. I granted everyone opportunities to change, but they paid me no attention. Where are their good works? I showed them the prodigal son as an example and many others so that they would not despair in their sins, but they despised My commandments and denied Me. “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind”—is a rather daunting theme to talk about, because it is so vast and all-encompassing. It touches on the whole purpose of our lives as Orthodox Christians. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: I have chosen you out of the world (John 15:19). We have been called out of this world in order to become citizens of another world: the Kingdom of God. That Kingdom begins now, in this life, continues after we leave this world, and will reach its consummation at the Second Coming of our Savior. In order to dwell in that Kingdom, to be its citizens, we must be transformed. Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Rom. 12:2). These words from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Romans help to introduce a Divinely inspired teaching on spiritual transformation. In this talk, I will speak first about the theological meaning of transformation in the Orthodox Church. -In Orthodoxy, salvation means not simply changing God’s attitude, but changing ourselves and being changed by God. Salvation ultimately means deification; and deification, as we have seen, entails transformation. It is being united with God ever more fully through His Grace, His Uncreated Energy, in which He is fully present. As we participate ever more fully in God’s life through His Grace, we become ever more deified, ever more in the likeness of Christ. Then, at the time of our departure from this life, we can dwell forever with Christ in His Kingdom because we “look like Him” spiritually, because we are shining with the Grace of God.
